I'm requesting that functionality to make Export easier is added to Lightning, for those of us who use Lightning primarily as a workaround for the Thunderbird bug with viewing Outlook calender events. The process now is ... open message; Event&Task; Export; select location; Save Navigate to finder; navigate to location; click on event and select where to put it. Wouldnt it be much more useful to have an Export button on the message itself that gives you the choice of save or Open in default Calendar ?

Shorter version: In the calendar pane on the left click on any calendar choose Export... from context menu. At least on Windows the file name is already filed in with calendar name and Thunderbird defaults to the last used folder. Or do you mean you want to save an ics attachment to disk that is part of an email message? Thunderbird offers this feature itself.

I'm talking about the latter. Thunderbird does not allow export for the majority of calendar invites, i.e. those received from Outlook that are sent incorrectly with Multipart/alternative. This is a an outstanding 7-year old, bug with 90 comments and at least 7 duplicates, in Thunderbird #505024 which the TB people refuse to fix because either: a) some people think its really Microsoft's problem, but the likelihood of them fixing it is zero, given that every other mail client (e.g. Apple Mail, etc) handle the events just fine. b) some people just say, install Lightning. Thankfully Lightning views the events (they caused a lot of data loss, including many reports of people missing meetings because they didn't even know the Outlook calendar event was missing). They say install Lightning, because Lightning supposedly fixes it, but its really painful given how hard it is to export a Lightning event and have it open up in your default Calendar. By the way ... there are quite a number of former TB users who switched precisely because of this problem, more and more people send Calendar invites instead of email, and missing meetings because your preferred email client has a bug isn't an option for many people.
