User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0
Build ID: 20160105164030
Steps to reproduce:
Start thunderbird (currently running Thunderbird 38.5.1).
Actual results:
Lightning tabs are not showing. When looking at the add-ons Manager page, it indicates that Lightning will be installed after you restart Thunderbird. I have clicked this and restarted several times, and Lightning is still not starting / loading.
Expected results:
Lightning should be installed, and running, and tabs visible.
Severity: normal → major
OS: Unspecified → Windows 7
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Currently, the only add-ons I have installed are: Enigmail 1.8.2, Extra Format Buttons 1.3, LookOut 1.2.13, Provider for Google Calendar 2.7
I am currently running Thunderbird 38.5.1 on Windows 7 Professional.
I'm having the same problem. I am also using Thunderbird 38.5.1 on Windows 7.
The add-ons page lists Lightning 4.0.5.2 and says "Lightning will be installed after you restart Thunderbird." I have restarted Thunderbird several times now, and Lightning does not get installed. Rebooting has not helped, either.
At least three new reports of this have been filed on the mozilla support forums today alone. I mean three new cases have been filed in the past 8 hours, not that I saw three existing cases when I looked at the forum today.
May be worth noting: I followed the instructions posted in this thread:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1097411#answer-814160
but the install still failed.
I also tried downloading the XPI file (lightning-4.0.5.2-sm+tb-windows.xpi) and installing from disk, but that failed as well.
I got some help with this issue on the mozilla support forums. They helped me solve this problem by downloading a new copy of Thunderbird 38.5.1 from http://getthunderbird.com, rebooting into "safe mode with networking", and reinstalling Thunderbird. The calendar has reappeared.
The person who suggested that strategy thought I might be experiencing this bug:

This is not related to bug 1211160, as Lightninf 4.0.5.2 is distributed by AMO and that bug affwcts only the bundled distribution.
Where is your TB profile licated and what file system is used there? Does the issue persist if you have disabled the provider for Google calendar?
(In reply to MakeMyDay from comment #5)
My profile is located on C:\ (which uses NTFS) at
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ftgo62r3.default
As I said in comment 4, the issue no longer persists since I reinstalled TB in "safe mode with networking." I never tried disabling the provider for Google calendar.

@bbroerman, does the issue still exist for you? Can you please also provide the infromation requested in comment 5?

Sorry for the delay. I've been extremely busy
I am running windows 7, NTFS filesystem. My thunderbird profile is located at: C:\Users\Brad\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\oy6prl73.default
I did try disabling all of the plugins and then re-enabling just lightning before logging this bug.
I deleted my install of lightning, and installed the previous version and it's been working properly in that configuration. When I get a free afternoon, I'll install the new version, and try different configurations.

This has also happened from time to time in the past... usually when either thunderbird or lightning update. I usually fix it by uninstalling whichever item updated, and installing the previous version.

bbroerman, thank you for reporting back.
Other than what echawkes described, your issue is most probably bug 1211160, which occurs only on TB updates (and not at sub cycle Lightning updates from amo) and will be fixed for the next TB update. Please observe whether the issue occurs again when TB is updated the nex time.

I've captured and attached the console log from my TB restart as directed. Sure would have been nice to have been able to simply output the log to a file rather than having to capture multiple screen shots. I even tried to select the entire log to copy to the copy buffer, but no joy.

You can output JavaScript Console content to file using the XRE_CONSOLE_LOG environment variable: <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/XULRunner/Debugging_XULRunner_applications#JavaScript_Console>

Tim, thank you for providing the logs. I assume, your TB profile's extension directory contains a staged directory. Does that contain a {e2fda...} folder? Can you zip that and attach it to this bug? Can your Windows user deal with that and its content permissionwise?

Yes, those directories exist, and in the {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} directory there is a app.ini, chrome.manifest and install.rdf all dated Feb. 8, 2016. The subdirectories there have modification dates of Feb 9, 2016.

Curious. I just went through a Windows Update requiring a reboot. When I look at those directories now, the last modified dates are all Jan 7, 2016. The app.ini file has disappeared. I can still read/write/create files in those directories as before. I don't think this is a permissions problem.

My bad. Forget about the last modified date confusion. I was checking the wrong directory. The staged directory and it's subdirectories have the dates as I first reported.

Thanks Tim. Can you please zip that directory and attach the zip file to the bug as requested? Can you please also answer the permission question?

Staged directory attached as requested. I have no problems reading, writing, and creating files in the staged directory or it's subdirectories from my user account. This doesn't appear to be a permissions issue.

I've just installed TB 38.6, and attempted to reinstall Lightning 4.0.5.2. Unfortunately, Lightning still fails to install properly. Are we any closer to figuring out what's going wrong? Is there a work-around for this?
Thanks.

After rebooting my computer this afternoon, and checking the TB Lightning 4.0.5.2 Extension, I found it is now installed. I don't think it is due to the reboot per se. My computer has been rebooted a number of times since the I first saw this problem. There was a major Windows 10 update last week, and that was the prior reboot. I rebooted today because there was an application update to my ESET NOD32 antivirus program to version 9.0.349.0. The prior version of NOD32 had been in place for a long time, though some modules had been updated recently, which did not require a reboot.
So, it's possible NOD32 was interfering, but I saw nothing in its logs to indicate that it was suppressing the Lightning installation.
I did notice one odd thing when viewing the TB (Google) calendar, however. There are some events not posted. They appear in my Google calendar when viewed on Firefox, and on my LG G3 (Android) smartphone. I've tried syncing Lightning, but that didn't matter. I also tried syncing on Firefox, then again on TB, but again it didn't matter. I'll look for an open bug for this issue, and open one if necessary.
