Steps to reproduce:
I'm not certain what is causing this problem. It simply recurs frequently and randomly.
Actual results:
Without any action on my part, I have lost bookmarks and entire folders of bookmarks, forcing me to restore my bookmarks from earlier history.
Try to reset your current profile to keep only your data:

You may try to fix the database with my add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
Is there any special thing about how you use your profile? Like do you have it on a network share or such?
Do you have corruption in other software as well or suffer of frequent crashes?
We should not exclude there may be a problem with your RAM or your hard drive... But let's start with the easier things first.
I have applied the reset as suggested. I will see if that helps. Thanks for the help!
My profile is not shared across any networks, but it is synced with other devices - my iPhone and iPad. I haven't had a crash in over two years, and the causes for that episode were handled at the time. Thanks for your interest!

Were you able to resolve this issue?

The reset procedure has corrected the problem. I have not experienced a loss of bookmarks or folders since performing the reset a couple of months ago.
