Steps to reproduce:

i was using firefox i had been reading online content but i stopped to watch a youtube video occasional my browser tends to crash at least once daily for a long while now i've reported it numerous times but this time when i reloaded firefox and clicked history and restore previous session like normal it restored my first browser and then a delay like normal but it failed to restore my second browser which i had numerous tabs and content to read stories i tried to restore the session again but a copy of my first window opened all the same tabs but my second window failed to open i ended my session as i've had a similar bug to restore my session again but it once more failed to restore the second window

Hey ray, we've done some work recently changing how Session Restore works. Have you seen this again recently?

well beside when it crashed (on windows end it went unresponsive the pop up for exit or wait for response) before i restored my tabs and i lost them i haven't tested if a second window is restored but my firefox only restores after i go to the restore previous session option even though in the setting it's set to resume from last time so personally i haven't seen any changes though maybe my firefox is just bugged i've been using firefox for 8 to 10 years

So I'm hearing multiple things here:

1) Instead of exiting Firefox, you chose to exit / log out of Windows with Firefox running, and that caused Windows to report Firefox as being unresponsive.

2) Your Firefox is configured to restore your windows and tabs immediately, but instead you're seeing about:home with the button to restore your last session.

Is that correct?

the second one is correct i do believe but the first is half false i didn't log out of windows just that Firefox went unresponsive and i then got a windows message about the program going unresponsive and asking if i wanted to close it down or wait for it to responded while i was trying to restore my tabs i was mid click and the mouse auto moved to the pop up and click the close down option before i had a chance to responded but that was a side note and a different time basically being windows caused the tab lose that time being different from the original problem because of windows thus it closed before the second condition came to be that being me manually restoring my tabs although if my option worked properly like it restoring my last session that time wouldn't have happened

does any of this make sense?

Here's what I got from it:

1) Firefox went unresponsive, and Windows brought up a dialog asking if you wanted to shut down Firefox or wait for it.
2) "Shutting down Firefox" was accidentally chosen
3) When Firefox started up again, your session wasn't loaded automatically. Instead, there was a button on the home page to restore your session.

Is that the correct series of events describing this bug?

mostly the first two are correct and the third one is incorrect my last session never loads i have to do it it manually from within the history options even though its set in the options to do so and because i have to do it manually when it went unresponsive before i restore my last session the session was lost but that was different then the problem i reported of secondary Firefox windows not restoring but if you know something that can fix my buggy Firefox then by all means i've had issues like my spell check is never active even when i turn it on in the options it automatically turns off and when i right click the text box and tun it on it's only on for that page if it refreshes or changes pages it off again and the restoring issues sorry if this makes no sense i'm trying my best to explain

Okay, so let's see if this is correct then:

1) Firefox went unresponsive, and Windows brought up a dialog asking if you wanted to shut down Firefox or wait for it.
2) "Shutting down Firefox" was accidentally chosen
3) When Firefox started up again, none of your last session was loaded automatically. Instead, it was necessary to open the History menu and restore the previous windows from the Recently Closed Windows menu item.

If (3) is still incorrect, can you explain where?

That sounds separate, at least for now, so let's set those aside while we drill down to what the bug is here.

no the issues with 3 is that it never loads previous session on start up and because it never does i have to do it manually in the history options normally that is ok but because of 1 and 2 happened the last session was a blank as it saved over my previous session with a blank on crash ok

yea it most likely the crash is a separate and not on Firefox's end but still the original issues was that the restore wasn't working properly i haven't tested it again since i had the problem the second time i don't find it worth it but if you could help me figure out what to do about the options errors like my start up restore not working and a annoyance of a side bug of spell check never activating that would probably fix my problems on both fronts as if it restore automatically i wouldn't have to worry about a Firefox pre-start up crashes and i just won't have secondary tabs until i get a complete conformation that it will restore

is that ok?

I'm hearing the following bugs in this paragraph:

1) Firefox is still not restoring your session automatically even though you've set the preference to do so.
2) Spell check is not working

(2) Still sounds like is not related to the one I'm centrally interested in here, which is the session restore bug. They should probably be filed separately, and dealt with separately outside of this bug while we figure out what's going on with your session restore.

So, to sum, it's important that I understand the scope of a single bug at a time - so let's leave the spell check one out for now.

Let's just talk about session restore in this bug from here on out.

What is the difference between what you wrote:

> no the issues with 3 is that it never loads previous session on start up and
> because it never does i have to do it manually in the history options

and what I wrote?:

> 3) When Firefox started up again, none of your last session was loaded automatically. Instead,

Because they sound the same, and I want to understand what the difference is - I feel like I'm missing part of the picture.

Are you saying that when you do manually restore your session, it isn't even correct?

ok i was saying you mostly had it right but because my option are messed up the session restore isn't automatic so like you said normally i have to do exactly what you said but because it crashed before the previous session was restored manually the last session changed from my session to a blank tab it's actually happened a few times in the past ... basically a double crash happened the crash that closed and needed to be restored which happens to me a lot and then the windows end crash which overwrote the session that had data with a blank tab ok?

Thank you ray.

In the past few weeks since reporting this, have you noticed the same session restore bug recurring? If so, I have a suggestion - try, for a few days, to run Firefox with your add-ons disabled. I suspect that one of them might be causing the session from shutting down properly, which is causing the session to not start correctly the next time Firefox loads.
