Expected results:
I think there should be floating action buttons (https://www.google.com/design/spec/components/buttons-floating-action-button.html#) on the tabs view.
This would
- improve the handling as the main buttons are larger and more at the bottom
- meet the material design guidlines
- provide clean and simple and intuitive tabs view
Additionaly there should be the opportunity to change to private browsing and back to normal tabs by swiping the background to the side (swipe on empty space).
I draw a screenshot how it could looks like (but I bet you can make this even better and nicer :) )
Ah and the '+' button should obviously open a private tab if we are on the right side... (so the menu entry 'New Private Tab' is superfluous...)
Anthony, have we considered anything like this?

Yep! I have some mocks and this is something I'd like to do with our tabs tray.
I'll make it block the correct meta so we don't lost track of it and update with mocks later.

Attaching an old WIP mock (treat as wireframe/sketch level of finishing) to show you what I mean :)
The idea here was to expand to show New tab, new private tab, and 3 recently closed tabs as options under the FAB button of "New (tab)".
Disclaimer: very raw, unfinished, and not at all final designs. Needs more UI/UX work.
Wow very nice (+1).
- I wouldn't show the 3 recently closed tabs but instead leave the view as simple as possible...
- The close all tabs button might not be required, I think... (but maybe you find a place for it)
- Maybe one can replace the "new tab" btn with the "new private tab" btn, when switching to the private tabs view -> so only one singe '+' FAB is required and one does not need to stack the buttons...
- And I don't understand what the back arrow on the top left does. Can you remove it?
Just my 2 cents ;)

This evidently has gone nowhere so far, but one objection against removing the new tab button from it's current location:
At the moment, the "+" button is perfectly aligned with the tabs counter in the address bar, so tapping twice on the tabs tray button works perfectly for opening a new tab.
