Running UW IMAP 2001a server on a Solaris 8 platform. With build 0.9.8 of Mozilla
I find that sending of e-mail has the following issues:
On the IMAP server system I get the error message "Sending of message failed"
and no e-mail is sent. On a Windows 98 system with build 0.9.8 the e-mail is
sent and then mozilla hangs. I had to use the task manager to abort the
process.

please try a newer build and see if this hasn't been fixed.
If not please attach a SMTP mail log so we can see what went wrong.

It does not log anything or I would have included that with the bug
report. Build 0.9.8 is the latest build so I will wait for the next
one, but since this has been an issue in the last two builds I doubt
that it will be fixed.

I am also receiving this error message. I am using Windows 98, and I was using Mozilla 0.9.8. I just updated Mozilla to build 2002030703, and still have the same problem.
I checked to make sure SSL was set to Never. I also tried sending with two different SMTP servers (smtp.east.cox.net and smtp.mail.yahoo.com).
Here's the full error message I get:
"Sending of message failed.
An error occurred sending mail: Unable to connect to the SMTP server. The server may be down or may be incorrectly configured. Please verify that your Mail/News account settings are correct and try again."
Neither the activity lights on my router nor the activity light on my modem lights up when I attempt to send. Obviously, the e-mail does not get sent.
I already tried creating a mail log, but it is empty.

Finally figured out what was causing this failure. I installed version 0.9.9 of
Mozilla. I renamed my .mozilla directory. Sending e-mail then worked. I then ran
Netscape 6.1 which gave a message about updating profile on startup. I tried
sending e-mail and it failed in Netscape. I then tried again in Mozilla and it
now would not send e-mail. I removed the Netscape packages from my system. I
was not able to determine what it changed that caused the problem as all visible
settings appeared to be the same. Netscape also caused another error with the
address book on startup. It gave a message:
The file /space/local/mozilla/chrome/packages/aim/SidebarPanel.xul cannot be found.
