User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0.4 Waterfox/43.0.4 Build ID: 20160114174705 Steps to reproduce: While moving messages into folders, TB temporarily hangs then it may or may not recover by itself. I'm using Win 10 x64 Home. This happens very often and now I'm filing a bug report. It has dead hung probably 20 times, half of which I had to 'end task' in task manager. Actual results: Hangs, then sometimes recovers, sometimes Windows will show a popup stating TB has stopped working, do something... Expected results: Should have been able to move messages into folders with no hanging, no crashing.

Is this when moving messages one at a time? Between imap folders? Is your thunderbird profile and the mail accounts on the local disk drive? Please try - start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10 - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 - XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode Does problem go away?

Yes, problem happens when moving one or more msg(s) at a time between regular TB folders. TB profile and account settings, etc. are all on the system drive (C:). Last night I updated to ver. 45.0b1. I'll try very hard to hang TB it now and then re-post. I just spent a few minutes trying to reproduce the problem but couldn't do it. I will keep trying and let u know. Thanks for your attention.

Well, TB 45.0b1 took some time off but today it started hanging, again. Same thing on my wife's PC also with Win10 x64 Home and TB 45.0b1. What happens is this: After sending a msg successfully I will click on the 'send' folder, then try to slide the msg I sent over to another folder, then it'll dead hang. The first time, a few minutes ago, it recovered by itself. The second time, I waited about 1 minute, and then had to kill the TB task from task manager. The caption in the way at the top of the TB window states, "Thunderbird not responding." Every once in a while, I'll get the Windows dialog box, ".. not responding .. do you want to end the program.." and I'll click on "end the program." This happens quite often. I'm debating going back to version 38.x. It almost seems like TB didn't get done sending the msg while I was trying to move it out of the sent folder, but the msg looked like it had landed there, OK. Yeah, I was just able to exactly make it hang by trying to move a sent msg out of the sent folder; and as I write, TB is "not responding" -- will have to kill it.
Quick update: Leaving off from my immediate last post, I let TB hang there for a long time, about 1.5 to 2 minutes, and it recovered by itself, and the msg was successfully moved out of the sent folder. It looks to me like there's some kind of massive delay right after sending a msg and being able to grab that msg and move it?! I guess I'll just have to wait and do something else after sending something, and then go back later to move and save my sent messages.
Thanks for the update. Again, please test in Windows' safe mode if at all possible similar report in bug 1206541 (but that doesn't mean the problem is caused by Thunderbird)

Update: I backed up my TB program (I use mozbackup) and then installed TB ver. 38.6.0 from its installer. Still had the same problem to my surprise. Then, I installed version TB ver. 45.0b1 from its setup file, and still had the problem. Now, I think it may be a Windows update KB (Knowledge Base update) thing. For some unknown reason I couldn't get the networking to work in safe mode with my hi-end MSI laptop. What I'll do next is to move to my big PC and see if TB 45.0b1 has the problem, and if so, I'll boot into safe mode with networking and check again. I'm busy with something right now, but I'll do these tasks very soon and re-post. My big PC also has Win 10 x64 Pro (the MSI laptop has Win 10 x64 Home). Standby, and thank you for your attention. We'll get to the bottom of this very soon!

Update: TB hangs all the time, now. I don't know what has happened to it. I did not get a chance to check it on my big PC computer, yet, but on my laptop I can't touch a new message at all, i.e., I can't move it nor delete it, so I have to train myself to leave it alone which is difficult, you know, habit. Just a few seconds ago I got a junk mail and went to delete it, yes, TB hung. Most of the time it takes a solid 2 minutes to de-hang itself, so I usually wind up "ending the task' from task manager. I can't move important message into their correct spots after I send them; it'll hang. Today, it hung way more than 10 times, maybe 15 times. I thought for sure I saw an association between TB and Waterfox (ver. 44.0.2) which is my browser, but I couldn't reproduce the hang with Waterfox open. There seems to me to be some kind of monumental delay after receiving a message where during this delay any received messages are off limits, so to speak. I'll bet there are other having this problem, too. I'll try my big PC very soon (I have another fixer-upper in the lab temporarily using the big one's monitors). I'll re-post ASAP.
In recent months in support I have seen lots of folk with complaints about hangs on Windows 10. Most are fixed by either creating an exception for the Thunderbird profile in the anti virus product, or for those using defender creating a exception for the Thunderbird process in that product. Could you try both of those things? or which ever applies to you. Right click the sent folder and select properties. What is the size on disk? Right click again and select compact. What is the new size on disk?
Hi Matt and Wayne, The file size of 'Sent' before compacting is 76 Kb, and after is 0 Kb. I added any .EXEs I found in the TB folder(s) in \Program Files (x86) to "always allow" in my anti-virus program. Will be testing and looking at the TB program in my other computer right away; then will re-post.
Hello Gentlemen, I tried TB 45.0b1 on my big computer and could Not get it to hang at all, and I really beat up on it! There's something different on my hi-end MSI notebook but I can't put my finger on it. I added many EXEs, and so on, into my anti-virus software's whitelist. I did notice that the hangs are not quite as long as before. But, I've had this hang problem only for a few weeks, and I haven't done anything special to the hardware or software other than the usual Win 10 auto updates and an NVIDIA update. I have run chkdsk and SFC /scannow on the system drive, the results of which are no errors, so it's not a disk drive problem. I just changed the setting in Options for 'how TB connects to the Internet' to "no proxy" from "use system proxy." So far, I could Not get it to hang, but I'll keep exercising TB and re-post if it works correctly or not. Thanks for your attention and help!
Thanks for the update
