Bug 1246028 recently had to translate "win" to "windows", and using "win" is no benefit to Mozilla developers besides saving a few keystrokes. "windows" is less jargon and matches the noun that our themes directories use.
I jumped the gun. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1246028#c26 says that this wouldn't really help because the web extensions API also uses "win" for the platform.
