Go to mail/news. Choose a long message by clicking on its subject in the list of messages. Hover over the message body and try to scroll it using the scroll wheel. Nothing happens. This is a platform parity bug -- this works correctly on Windows. Nominating for nsbeta1 because this affects and hinders most Mac mail users.

You need to provide more info, because this sounds like a bug that could depend on what mouse you have installed etc. Moving to XPToolkit and CC'ing mac gurus (that could triage this bug).

This happens on the osx CFM builds too... but seems to work on the mach-o builds... If you click in the message panel then scroll your set till the next msg, however you can not scroll in the list of msg panel.

What mouse / driver are you using? Scrolling performance with my Kensington Mouse-In-A-Box Optical Pro USB with MouseWorks 5.7 has been finicky as compared to Netscape 6.2.1, with some pages scrolling slowly and others not at all. (I filed a bug, but it was marked as a duplicate of the old, all-encompassing bug, "Some OS / driver combinations won't scroll" or something similar.)

Nav triage team needs info: What driver is affected? Can anyone else reproduce? Does it work for anyone? Pink: do you have any cycles for this?

this 'works' on X for me, but i have to continue clicking in the message pane. as soon as i move the mouse out of the panel, i have to "reset" it by clicking again for the scrollwheel to work. i'll take a look, i guess.

I just tried it, and using the scroll wheel in the message pane does not work at ALL for me on OS 9.2.2 with Mozilla 0.9.8 and Kensington MouseWorks 5.7, no matter how many times I try to activate the pane. Scrolling on web pages is finicky, with some pages not scrolling at all, some scrolling one line and no more, and others scrolling one line every second very jerkily.

Is this another problem caused by JS being disabled for the message pane (see also bug 74688)

this actually fixes two separate issues: 1) on pages with iframes, we would sometimes stop scrolling because the port's origin would be left hanging. A StOriginSetter fixed this 2) we weren't passing the coords to gecko in a widget-relative fashion. I'm amazed this ever worked. Now we do. needs r/sr

Is the patch in the nightlies yet? I downloaded build 2002022208 on OS 9.2.2, and with a fresh profile I can't get my Kensington Mouse-In-A-Box Optical Pro with MouseWorks 5.7 to scroll ANYWHERE except in the CC field on Bugzilla.

Did this get into 2002-02-22-07-trunk? The original test case (see the top of this bug report) still fails -- the scroll wheel still doesn't scroll the message pane, and now no combination of mouse moves and focus change clicks will make it scroll a message. The scroll wheel does scroll the list of message subjects just fine, and it scrolls most (but not all due to other bugs) web pages fine.

fixes os9. actual mouse location we get from the OS is bogus (hacked up to make the scrollwheel work by drivers) so don't rely on it. hack up our own local coordinate. r/sr?

Mozilla Build 2002022808, Mac OS 9.2.2, Kensington Mouse-In-A-Box Optical Pro with MouseWorks 5.7 I've just noticed that the only time the scroll wheel will work on web pages is when I have the cursor over an image -- and even then it only scrolls for every five or so turns of the wheel. Okay, I take that back. On THIS page it will scroll when I have my cursor over a link or some areas of text. It doesn't take kindly to scrolling over white space, though -- occasionally it does nothing, and otherwise it selects some of the text. I have the same results in Mail / News -- a newsgroup message would scroll when I had the cursor over a link, but not over plain text or white space.

I just tried the trunk 2002022808 build. The original problem hasn't been fixed yet -- it's back to when the bug was opened -- and other areas that used to work have regressed. The original test case (see the top of this bug report) still fails. I can use the scroll wheel to scroll the body of a message only after clicking in the message to set the focus there, whereas on other platforms I need only hover the mouse over the body of a message and use the scroll wheel. Scrolling of the list of message subjects has regressed. This worked before the last checkin, but now there is no way to scroll the list of messages using the mouse wheel, even after setting focus in the proper pane.

it works fine for me with a microsoft scroll mouse (i swear), and i have no access here to anything but. someone in mtn view should probably take this who has access to waldemar's mouse.

I have a MacAlly iOptinet mouse. Note that wheel-scrolling the Manage Bookmarks window (bug 128376) regressed recently as well, possibly related to this bug. It worked on Feb 8th, but now I can't use the mouse wheel to scroll that window at all, regardless of focus clicks and such.

Waldemar, can you be persuaded to try USB Overdrive <http://www.usboverdrive.com/> to see if your problem is driver related?

I just tried USB Overdrive. I removed the MacAlly driver and installed the USB Overdrive one. Other than my mouse being somewhat less responsive in all applications, there is no change. All scroll wheel symptoms and problems are exactly as before.

very strange. For all intents and purposes USB OverDrive == MS IntelliMouse drivers so I don't understand why pink can't see the problem.

uh, wait a minute. i can't fix it from 3000 miles away. a macdev engineer (not a manager) in mtn view, needs to take this bug. robert? what's your disdain for owning this?

ok, after trying it again and re-reading waldemar's last comment, here's what i'm going to do. - this bug, as described in the subject (doesn't scroll message pane) works. waldemar even says so. the fact that you have to click first is an issue with os9 and we're not going to fix it. it doesn't do that on osx. - it appears that scrollwheel support is broken in all outliners (bookmarks, mailnews folder pane and thread pane). that's a different bug than described here. a new one will be filed. marked fixed. let's leave it this way.
