I have subscribed ten newsgroups from news://news.cn99.com. This server has more
than 20 thousand newsgroups. When I click a newsgroups (e.g. "linux.redhat"),
mozilla is no responding at once. I have to kill the process to end it.
If I subscribed from another server: news://zhnews.net. It has only 1 thousand
newsgroups. Mozilla will be all right and run fast.
My hardware: Pentium133/80MB RAM/4.3GB HDD (Notebook)
My software: Windowds 2000 Professional Simplified Chinese Edition. Mozilla 0.9.8

I can't really tell if you're trying to open the newsgroup, or subscribe to
newsgroups. I'm guessing the first one. Have you ever downloaded headers for the
newsgroup in question, or is this the first time you've clicked it? Downloading
and saving that many headers (20,000) is going to be very slow. You can tell it
you only want to download the 500 most recent headers (for example) which will
make it much more useable, especially on a p133 machine.
My thoughts on this is that it's a contention lock or thrashing (paging memory
out to disk for swap). Mozilla's minimal 'supported/recommended' config is a
P266 with 128 megs of RAM. Makes sense that the larger newsgroup is causing you
problems. I'm not really sure what can be done here. What is Outlook Express
5/6 like on this machine?
No response, wfm. On my 266 with 128MB of RAM, it's barely tolerable, but then
again, I'm running Win98 on that machine, not the hefty RAM eater - Windows 2000
;-).

Sorry, I don't have problems with this other than performance (but not hanging).
Build 2002-03-01-03, Windows 98/Windows 2000.
Verified wfm.
