** Observed with 2002-02-16 trunk build **

I have an Address Book list cotaining 8 names.
When I use this list name to try to send to all 8 eight
people, the addressee field of the sent mail and received mail
actually contain 3-4 times more than 8 becuase the same address is
replicated 3-4 times. I don't know if the recipients are getting
3-4 copies of the same message but the header field contains
too many addresses
I don't think we should leave this problem in if we want
people to make use of the list feature. Nominating for nsbeta1.

Discussed in 2/27/02 Mail & News bug meeting. Decisions was to plus this bug as
a P2.
Keywords: nsbeta1nsbeta1+
Priority: -- → P2
Target Milestone: --- → mozilla1.0
This is what I observed using Trunk build 2002-03-01: WinMe

- I created a list with 8 entries (1-8)
- Open the list and notice that the first entry appears at the end of the list
- Close the list and now the card pane displays the 8 entries and then the 1st
entry at the end of the list so now there are 9 entries (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1)
- Everytime I open and close this list it adds another instance of the 1st
address (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1,1)
- I create a message, address it using the list name, send it and after checking
the message in the Sent folder it displays the correct addresses but also
includes multiple entries of the 1st address.
To reproduce the problem with the entries appearing 3 or 4 times Kat suggested:
a. Selecting a card from the CAB
b. DnD the card from CAB to PAB (top level)
c. Then from the PAB (top level) select the card and DnD to a list in the
directory pane
d. Select the list in the directory pane but the card does not appear in the
results pane (I can reproduce this more easily if the email address has caps but
I'm not sure if this is required)
e. Go back to PAB and DnD the card again to the list in the directory pane
f. Select the list again in the directory pane, open the list and the entries
appear 3 or 4 times.

Note: I was able to reproduce this scenario one time but Kat might be able to
reproduce more easily.

So this bug mentions 2 different problems:
1. The first entry continually being added every time the list is opened/closed
if the list has between 8-12 entries (easily reproduced)
2. The list gets into a state where it displays entries 3-4 times in a list
(need to isolate when this occurs)
The first issue is covered in bug# 118337:
1. The first entry continually being added every time the list is opened/closed
if the list has between 8-12 entries (easily reproduced)

I would like to reserve this bug for Kat's specific issue:
2. The list gets into a state where it displays entries 3-4 times in a list
(need to isolate when this occurs)
Adding dependency on bug 118337.

Just a side note: the problem of "DnD the same card to an empty list resulting
in multiple cards in the list" is fixed by bug 128535 (ie, only one card is
added in this case).
Depends on: 118337

Trunk build 2002-04-05: WinMe
I can reproduce the problem much more easily now after:
- First creating an empty list
- Close/reopen the AB window
- Expanding the PAB widget in the directory pane
- Adding an entry to the empty list
- Closing the AB window
- Sending a message

Steps to reproduce in more detail:
1. New profile
2. Configure for a mail account
3. Open the Address Book
4. Create an emptylist, by giving it a name but do not place any entries yet.
- First List Name: emptylist
5. Close/Reopen the Address Book
6. Create another list and add an entry, now expand the Personal Address Book
widget so you see the lists in the directory pane (w/t creating the second list
it's more likely that a crash will occur but I'll log another bug for that)
- Second List Name: sflist, sfopera1@netscape.net is the entry.
7. Edit the Empty List so it has one entry
- First List Name: emptylist, webtest128@netscape.net is the entry
8. Close the Address Book window
9. Send a message to the list "emptylist"

Actual Results:
a. Go to the Sent folder to view the message header and it displays To:
webtest128@netscape.net 3 times!
b. Open the Address Book window, select emptylist from the results pane and the
card pane displays "webtest128@netscape.net" 4 times!
c. Wait, there's more...click on the second list "sflist" and it displays
"sfopera1@netscape.net" 4 times as well.
d. Close the AB window
e. Send to the emptylist again
f. Reopen the AB window and now "emptylist" displays 5 entries and the "sflist"
also displays 5 entries.
g. Exit/restart
h. Open AB window
i. Now both lists only display one entry (as originally designed)
j. Close the AB window
k. Send a message to the emptylist again
l. Open AB window and now each list displays 4 entries
m. Close the AB window
n. Send using the second list "sflist" and it exhibits the same problem. Now
there are 5 entries in both lists.

Copying my comment from the dup bug 135948:

I've sent a message a last week to a few people and two lists. In the Sent folder
I now see that all list addresses are repeated twice (two copies of each list in
a row).

Mozilla 2002040219 on RedHat Linux 7.2 (so setting OS to ALL).
OS: Windows 2000 → All
I can confirm that my recipients see one copy (don't know how many are actually
sent), but they and the spam filter see up to nine duplicate entries in the
headers -- a 16 member list. A smaller list inserts fewer duplicates.
Blocks: 136757
Blocks: 128661
Using build 2002041603. Today I edited a list to remove one entry that appeared
twice. When I completed the action every other entry appeared THREE times. I
shut down Mozilla and the reloaded it to be sure. The triple entries were still
there.
Another way to reproduce this problem:

1. Compose new email message

2. Pick a list for "To" recipient. Doesn't have to be
long. List with 2 addresses are sufficient.

3. Save the message (ctrl-s) into the draft folder.

4. Send the message.

5. View the list. The addresses would have been
   duplicated 2 or 3 times.

I'm using mozilla 2002041409 on linux.

Here is another way to produce the duplicates:
1. In the compose window press the "Address" button.
2. Select a mailing list and press "Edit".
3. Press "Cancel" in the Mailing List window.
4. Press "Cancel" in Select Addresses Window.
5. Press "Adress" button again.
6. Select any mailing list and press "Edit".
You will see all entries as duplicates. If you repeat this game a few times,
every time the original entries become duplicated once again. This is true for
all mailing lists.

Note, there were two very early bugs with very similiar scenraios (61033 &
45896). Those bugs were resolved as worksforme and I verified that they were
indeed working with 6.2 and 6.2.2 builds. This is a regression from 6.2.2.

Even in Mozilla 1.0 CR1 the problem still exists. Sending a mail to a list from
the addressbook results in as many copies as there are members in that list send
to each member of that list (i.e. a list of 5 members results in each member
receiving 5 copies of the same mail).

This makes the addressbook useless at the moment.

Also: the target milestone is mozilla 1.0 but in CR1 the bug still exists!
Seems to work OK in 1RC2.

Branch build 2002-05-07: WinMe, ok.
Trunk build 2002-05-07: WinMe, ok.
I tried the scenarios described in Comments 11, 16 and 18 and no longer see
duplicate entries anywhere.
Marking fixed- since we want this to be on the QA radar.
