The documentation specifies that the .sign() and .verify() take a first argument as a DOMString. 

This is incorrect.

The first argument is an algorithm description object e.g. for "ECDSA" you would use something like:
{ name: "ECDSA", namedCurve: "P-256", hash: { name: "SHA-256" } }
