See attached screenshot for an illustration of the problem. It makes the Wide view pretty much unusable. For reference, I am using Thunderbird 38.7.2 on a 2013 Macbook Pro 13" with Retina display on Mac OS 10.11.

I've seen something like this once in the last few weeks on Windows. 
Does it happen also with Thunderbird started in safe mode?

No, it doesn't happen in safe mode. The only add-on I have installed is Lightning 4.0.7.2 and the only plugin I have enabled is Flash. 

I did the following trying to troubleshoot the issue and it no longer reproduces.
1) Start in normal mode
2) Disable Lightning and restart in normal mode
> Bug still reproduces
4) Disable Flash and restart in normal mode
> Bug still reproduces
5) Enable Lightning and restart in normal mode
> Bug no longer reproduces
6) Enable Flash and restart in normal mode
> Bug no longer reproduces

I'm wondering if this was caused by an email with Flash content which was forced to let go when I disabled Flash. I can't think of what else might cause it.

I doubt it's related to flash. 

This rather sounds like bug 1197605. (and bug 535204 is an old, should be long gone, issue)  But these kind of display issues in TB can be a little strange - it may require some sequence of events before clicking on the message for the problem to occur, i.e. it might not always happen when clicking on the message right after startup.

Let's call it incomplete for now, and reopen if you see it again.
