(Keywords: hang)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0
Build ID: 20160105164030
Steps to reproduce:
Double-clicked an email attachement to download it.
Found place in Windows (7) file structure but needed a new subfolder to store it to. Right clicked and selected 'new folder'.
Thunderbird hangs and has to be closed via Task Manager.
This function used to work in the previous version of Thunderbird that I used.
Actual results:
thunderbird hangs.
Expected results:
NEw sub-folder should have been created. I would have clicked on it to make it the 'current' folder and then would have selected 'download' (or maybe it's 'save?)

I can't reproduce this but maybe your circumstances are different.
Double click usually opens the attachment.
Tell us more details:
- Attachment type?
- IMAP or local folder?
- Why do you double-click to save?

Sorry, I wrote the problem slightly wrong. I right-clicked and chose 'save as' (but same thing happens if I choose 'download' button).

Now that we've established that you use "save as", please answer the remaining questions:
- Attachment type?
- IMAP or local folder?

It's the same situation whatever the file type.
I'm not sure what an IMAP or local folder are.
When I try to save I see exactly the folder structure I see when I go into Windows Explorer. User/Andy/My Documents/etc.
If I create a new folder in Windows Explorer in advance then I have no problem saving to it. However if I try to create that folder during the Thunderbird save process then Thunderbird hangs as soon as I right click in the folder dialogue box(which used not to be the case). Previously a right-click brought up a context menu one option of which was 'new/folder'.

Wayne, can we please not classify an unconfirmed bug as "critical". I can store saved attachments in new folders created via the Thunderbird "Save Attachment" dialogue with no problem. You try it yourself, please. It's no good to have a critical bug in the system what we can't even reproduce.
Reporter:
A local folder is a folder typically stored under "Local Folders". If your account is POP, all your folders will be local. If you have an IMAP account, then at least the inbox will be an IMAP folder. You'd have to check in you account settings under "Server Settings".
Severity: critical → normal

Should I presume that if I'm the only one reporting this then it will be left, as it's impossible to solve if unreproducable?

We can't fix what we can't reproduce. We don't know what's going on your system. We are of course interested in hangs or crashes, but we are unable to give specific support.
I guess some more people on Windows will try the scenario and maybe someone can reproduce it.
Otherwise the affected user has to try to debug it himself, that is, try on another machine, try different versions of TB, look what other software they have installed on Windows, like anti-virus solutions, etc.

An issue that claims to hang, or crash, is by definition critical [1]. The user says "Thunderbird hangs and has to be closed via Task Manager."
There is no requirement that an bug be reproducible by us before it is given a severity - whether it's minor, normal or critical. Plus critical doesn't mean it's high priority, it's just a category. It helps people who care about such issues be able to find them in bugzilla. And in general it's helpful for tracking purposes to have bug fields reflect what we know or are told (just like the contents of the bug summary), until told or proven otherwise.

Just checked this again and I find it's no longer an issue. No idea why - I haven't updated anything or changed and settings (just worked around it since logging it by creating folders before downloading).
So thanks for the attempts to resolve this but it's now OK.

for the record, andy writes still "no sign of the problem any more. Absolutely no idea why" it is gone.
