Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_11_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.112 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Hover over web content Select the corresponding text block for editing Start typing your translation while in editing mode Actual results: The highlighted text is deleted once one starts typing. The user therefore has no reference for the original text being edited, unless they open the same page on another tab or machine Expected results: It'd be better if the text being edited was still visible, e.g. it can be crossed out (strikethrough), or be displayed on a separate block
Summary: In Editing mode when one starts typing the highlighted text is deleted, there's no reference to previous translation → Retain (strikethrough) previous translation for reference while in Editing mode
That's actually by design. We select text instantlly, so users don't need to delete it manually. It works well for most strings, which are shorter. You can still unselect text (e.g. with cursor keys) if you prefer. I do agree however that we should keep the original string available somewhere, which is what bug 1183819 is about.
