Mozilla (0.9.7) has deleted one of my accounts from one day to another.
It was an IMAP Account which works all right on my Windows MUA.
Additionally,mozilla refuses to create a new account:
There is no error message,but when I click on "finish" after entering the
account data,mozilla does not react and stays in the menu,until
I close it.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Edit Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
2.Add Account
3....entering the information...
4. FINISH !!!

Actual Results:  Mozilla stays in the summary window in which the finish button
is and does not react.

Expected Results:  It should have created my account.
Moreover,it should not have deleted it before anyway.
Do you still see the Account in profilename\*.slt\imapmail\ ?
Do you see your Account in  profilename\*.slt\prefs.js ?

In profilename\*.slt\imapmail\ ,
the correct address of my imap-server is saved as a directory and as an
msf-file.

The prefs.js contain 4 "mail.identity.id"s, two of them have the values of
the same account,one account I have deleted months ago,
and also the lost account.

Hope I could help you,
To me,it's even more confusing.
Can you attach your prefs.js to this bug ("Use the create a New Attachment" link
)and tell us which Accounts are still valid ?

Your profile is corrupt and you can create a new one with "mozilla -profilemanager".

If you have a pop3 Account mail me and I tell you how to move you existing
Accounts  and Mails into a new profile..

OK, I have created a new profile, and it seems to work.
I hope not to have this problem again in the future.
