Steps to reproduce:

I have three mail accounts plus local folders set up.  Normally I have the Unified Inbox selected.  I have message set to be marked as read automatically after 5 seconds (Tools/Options/Display/Advanced/Reading)

Sometimes when I select a new message (from the Unified Inbox view) , and leave it selected, it will be marked as read after 5 seconds.  Sometimes it will remain marked as unread.  If I switch to the view for the account the message is in and select the same message, it will be marked as read in 5 seconds.

So far, the only thing that I've that seems to explain why some messages are marked as read and some are not is when the message was sent/received.  For example, I have a thread for Thunderbird bug in my Google mail account.  If I mark all of the messages in the thread as unread and then go through the thread in date order, none of the messages received between Wed, 13 Apr 2016 15:12:32 -0700 (PDT) and Sat, 23 Apr 2016 12:05:02 -0700 (PDT) will be marked as read automatically when I select them.  All of the messages before and after those times are marked as read automatically.  Now that I've noticed that, it appears that all messages received during that approximate date read will not be marked as read automatically.

I have Thunderbird set up with the same mail accounts on three different machines, on Linux box and two Win 7 x64 machines.  The behavior is the same on all three.

I just upgraded to thunderbird 45 and the behavior is the same there as wel


Actual results:

It appears that all messages received between some time on April 13, and some time on April 23 will not be marked as read automatically when selected.


Expected results:

The messages should be marked as read automatically when selected for 5 seconds or longer.
OS: Unspecified → All
Hardware: Unspecified → All
And it's happening again.  Still seems to be related to receipt time.  Mail received at 1500 will automatically be marked as read and mail received at 1715 will not.

Yes it does. Messages are not being marked as read if I view them in the unified mailbox.  If I view messages in the account mailbox, they are marked as read.

Note:  I have one other bug open against unified mailboxes (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1267056) and one that I should open: Receipt of a new message while a messages in the unified mailbox is selected causes the selected message to change -- usually to a message that is 2 or 3 years old.  In all three cases, the problem goes away if I use the account mailbox instead of the unified mailbox.  I can't help but think these things are all related somehow.

I expect this will be difficult to duplicate but I can recreate with astounding regularity so it would be nice if there was something I could do to try to debug this (these) problems.
This (along with the related problems of enabling remote content and the selected message changing upon receipt of new mail) has started happening again.  For what it's worth, I upgraded to 45.2.0 yesterday but I do not know if the two are directly related.

When using Unified folder mark as read does not work only on with some mail accounts.
We have 11 mail accounts configured.
Also when using Unified folder the show remote content function does not works only with some accounts.
We tried with safe mode without addons but it is the same.
We also tried to delete global db file but issue remains.
We tried to roll back to version 38 but issue remains.

I'm also experiencing this problem with 45.5.1 on Windows 10. I had 3 accounts which works and then I added 2 more. The first works without problems in Unified, but not the second. However, if I switch from Unified it works.
Tried to restart in safe mode, but it's the same there.

Phenomenon when same messageKey(Order Received column value)?

"Unified Folder" is merely a Search Folder(Virtual Folder).
See Folder Properties of "Inbox" in Unified View and "account" under the "Inbox"(==real folder).
IIUC, differences from ordinal Search Folder are:
  Search target folder is pre-selected, and search condition is Match all messages.
  It can be modified manually, but it's changed back sooner or later by Thunderbird(at least after Restart).
  For user's convenience, watch real folder(search target folder), and update status such as "Read/Unread of mail".

Show Account column(account name) and Order Received column(messageKey value, if imap, messageKey=UID of mail).
note: column selection is not saved currently when Virtual Folder(Unified folder, Search folder, Search panel)

Phenomenon when multiple messages have same Order Received column value?
If so, is status of "only one message in the messages of same value" updated as expected?

By the way, folder switch of "Unified Inbox -> account under Inbox(or other Unified Folder) -> Unified Inbox" is re-open of Unified Inbox. Currently, there is no "Refresh" like button or menu(already requested). So, above "folder switch" is simplest/easiest and perfect way to do "Refresh".
I believe that many funny phenomena disappear by the "Refresh"(folder switch && switch back).
I think you are better to do the "Refresh" frequently, if you have time to open bug at B.M.O for funny phenomenon :-)

Anyway, please keep "one problem per a bug". Please add comment on remote image at bug for remote image.
