45.0 upgrade will not display email message body and stays on "Loading...". Shows messages list (subject lines, date and time). Lightning update complication?

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/49.0.2623.112 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

I unfortunately allowed Thunderbird to update to version 45.0, and now none of the email messages will display within the message pane. I've restarted, and the same thing. Right now, Thunderbird is unusable, and I cannot access my emails. Very frustrating! I can't even access an email from Mozilla to reset my support password!!!

Actual results:

The "Loading..." appears in the middle between the upper email list and lower message pane, but never displays the message. Even when double clicking on a message to open up the window, it does the same thing, and never displays the message.

Expected results:

Really?!?

I should be able to view my messages received via email, as I always have. I cannot.

No, I'm not, but apparently someone else is having the exact same problem.

Why doesn't Mozilla have ANYWHERE a list of prior releases, so that someone like me can easily access the immediately prior version that was working properly?

The only thing I can find is a thread from 2006, and others even older.

Quite simply, I need a reliable email program in which I may receive, access, read, and respond to emails. Thunderbird is seeming more like Dunderbird or Deadbird at this point.
I had to install a really old 2015 version 38 I had in my Downloads section, just to be able to view your email.
Does your issue reproduce if you start Thunderbird in safe mode?
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

(not 64bit issue)

> Why doesn't Mozilla have ANYWHERE a list of prior releases, so that someone like me can easily access the immediately prior version that was working properly?
Because it is a strong preference, for many reasons, that users not take that route
Flags: needinfo?(mikebaldwin1)
Keywords: 64bit
Too bad, because it appears to be the only route at the moment.

Safe mode results in the same problem. the "Loading..." message just stays there in the middle pane, and no email body text will display. At this point, unless I install an older version, I won't even be able to read any more of your messages to me about this major issue with Dunderbird.
Is there any way to migrate back to the prior version that actually functioned properly?

I can't find the prior version ANYWHERE in online searches, and because the v 45 and prior upgrades were performed from within the app, I don't have the prior versions. All I can find is v 38, which I guess I'll have to go back to.

This seems very disorganized, not to have the prior versions for rollback when there are terminal and catastrophic problems, such as I'm experiencing.

All I can read are the subject lines, date and time, no message body. Which basically makes Dunderbird useless for email, and I can't find any other purpose for it if it cannot even perform basic email retrieval, viewing, and responding.
What would any intelligently viable alternative be, other than rolling back to the last version that functioned properly, when an update does not allow a user to view their emails?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Because I had to reinstall v45, it required a re-boot of my system, which, while working on multiple projects simultaneously, is a real PIA.

The first time I tried starting up Tbird in safe mode, is must not have done it, because the pop-up window didn't appear.

I just closed Tbird and tried safe mode again (Shift key), and this time the pop-up appeared, allowed me to view my emails within the pane, but now my calendar isn't there in Safe mode, which I also use hourly, if not more often.

Why did someone break what wasn't broken and didn't need fixing?
At this point, I see no wisdom in ever upgrading Tbird, until and unless it's a version that has been working for others and proven, and then only installing the version prior to the current one.

I've wasted so much time and energy on something that frankly, just needs to work. I'm not attempting anything CPU intensive with the app, I just want to be able to send and receive emails, as well as maintain my calendar (which obviously isn't working in Safe mode).
Sorry you a frustrated and disappointed. You sound like a smart guy. FWIW I've *never* known anyone (developer or user) who needed to reboot windows to reinstall any Thunderbird version. Also, it is trivially easy to find previous version with google search http://lmgtfy.com/?q=thunderbird+prior+version

The problem you are describing sounds like an issue with the mozilla update system where the Lightning addon isn't fully updated. This is usually resolved by reinstalling the *current* version of Thunderbird or manually updating lightning. In this case https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/lightning/ which just got a new version approved *today* an hour or two ago.

Thanks, and I've been working on computers of various iterations since 1978.

For whatever reason, the Tbird v45 install from v38 (which was the only version I had in my D/L folder) came up with a pop-up that mandated a re-install to complete the upgrade. It wasn't any other app other than Tbird, so I guess Mozilla does require a re-boot with a major version upgrade that spans over a number of others, as was the case here.

Also, I tried searching Google for access to prior versions of Tbird, which has worked before and where I can find almost anything, normally, but all I was getting on the first few results pages were really old threads within Mozilla, or many from less than reliable sites (which I tend to ignore).

I'll try that with the newer add-on, and completely understand the compatibility issue.

The fundamental problem I have is this:

Why would Mozilla promote an upgrade to Tbird, including automatically upgrading any add-ons, when it knows they aren't yet compatible?

This doesn't seem right to me. It would seem far more reasonable to NOT put out the v45 notification and automatic upgrading of add-ons that aren't fully tested yet.

At least the newer versions of Tbird scan for installed add-ons. However, until and unless all applicable add-ons are fully functional, I don't feel the "call to action" for upgrade should take place.
Unfortunately, even though all prior versions of Tbird appear on the Release page, the download link on each of them appears to direct a user to the most current version, and not the version they're trying to access.

In this case, I'm trying to get to v 38.7.2, which is the last known version that maintained proper functionality. When I clock on the link to access 38.7.2. it directs me to D/L v 45 again.

Aargh!
working with computeres since '75 ;)

v 38.7.2 *is* indeed the prior version

There is absolutely no OS reboot prompt for thunderbird updates. Ditto for Firefox. If you got something telling you to reboot it did not come from thunderbird.
Sorry, the pop-up was indeed from Mozilla Thunderbird, saying that the installation needed the system to reboot before it could be finished. I suggest you try replicating it and you'll see what I mean.

I installed the 2015 version 38.0b6, which is the newest version I could access on my HDD. When I installed v45.0 again, the pop-up requiring reboot came up from Tbird, no other major app or program running (other than a few minor Startup apps, and Chrome for viewing this thread).

The reboot message pop-up did indeed come from Thunderbird v45 installation.

I've now tried installing the applicable add-on for Lightning, and I'm still caught in a "Catch-22."

I've tried starting up Tbird 45 in std. mode, where none of my messages can be displayed, and the Lightning add-on doesn't appear to finish installing correctly.

I've also tried starting up Tbird in safe mode, where I can view my emails, and the Lightning add-on doesn't install properly.

I also cannot access v 38.7.2 anywhere, other than perhaps through some of the spam sites that I don't trust.

Can anyone please provide me access to Tbird 38.7.2 D/L?

I'm feeling I'm back in the BBS days.
Right now, I have no way to access my Lightning calendar, and I feel the only way I'm going to be able to is to go back to Tbird 38.7.2, where it was working properly.

Once again, even on the Tbird Releases page, when I click on 38.7.2, it takes me to that info page where there are links, including one for Download, which takes me to the primary Tbird D/L page for v 45.0
no idea what you are looking at for old release since you haven't cited the URL.

So again http://lmgtfy.com/?q=thunderbird+prior+version
first hit, takes you to all the old releases
Perhaps some of the relational bindings within Tbird were significantly updated between versions 38.0b6 and 47.0, which I had downloaded to my HDD because I had lots of problems with the 38.0 upgrade, too.

While that may have been a beta (with the "b" designation), it did fix my prior issues. However, it probably has issues if upgrading from that directly to version 45.0 which does, in fact, require a reboot within at least the Windows 7, 64-bit, OS.
Wayne, been there and done that.

I visited the link you provided, then clicked on 38.7.2, which takes me to:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/38.7.2/releasenotes/

On that page, it provides only 4 links, which take you to:

Check - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/38.7.2/system-requirements/
(I already know it's compatible, because it was working, and no link for accessing D/L of 38.7.2 exists there)

Download - https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/
(only accessing the current v45.0 version)

Install - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Installing%20Thunderbird

Customize - https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/

Any other suggestions?

Thus far, none of the proposed solutions work, nor is Tbird, and it's wasting a lot of my valuable time.

I'm also pretty sure if I were to re-install Tbird 38.0b6 again, then migrate to installing v45, the pop-up from Tbird would appear again, which can be replicated over and over again.

correction, lost a character in paste.
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/
Actually, missing that character worked, while the corrected link didn't, because it allowed me to access the root directory listing of the one and only file there.

Yep, what I just did, multiple times, and at no time did it provide me with the base text page:
"Index of /pub/thunderbird/releases/38.7.2/win32/en-US/" with the text link to the applicable file.

Perhaps developers have access that users do not, because nowhere through any of the links provided on the Thunderbird Release page for 38.7.2 was the applicable directory base and single file text link listed.

I'm rolling it back, because even the current version of the Lightning add-on won't install and function within v45, whether started in safe mode, std. mode with add-ons enabled or disabled.

Tbird 45 and Lightning appear to still need a lot of work, at least for implementation on Win7, 64-bit OS, like my system (HP Z400 Workstation, Intel Xeon W3565, 16Gb RAM).
I've now successfully downgraded to Tbird 38.7.2, but cannot get the Lightning 4.0.5.2 version to install and function.

I've downloaded the XPI file, tried installing it by accessing the file downloaded, and nothing. I've restarted Tbird in safe mode, std. mode, add-ons enabled & disabled, and nothing brings back Lightning within Tbird 38.7.2.

However, I was able to change updates to manual, from this point forward.

At this point, I just need to get Lightning to function properly within Tbird 38.7.2.

Any viable suggestions?
Please, as previously stated, I just need the Lightning calendar to appear.

I'm giving up on Tbird v 45.0, as I've now gotten v 38.7.2 back into my system and can read my email.

However, trying all options to re-install or repair Lightning 4.0.5.2 have been unsuccessful, which appears to be the newest version compatible with Tbird 38.7.2.
Is there a congif file I can access?

At this point, I'd even be willing to modify my Registry, which is something I don't like to do manually, if not necessary.
Sorry... config file, fingers moving too quickly...
go to your Thunderbird profile directory. instructions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_how-to-find-your-profile

go into the extensions folder. shut down thunderbird.

backup thunderbird per same link above

delete the lightning directory named {e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} (it does not contain data)
restart thunderbird. install appropriate version of lightning
Yeah, I've transferred by profile numerous times, especially when upgrading computers.

I'm in the process of backing up that 19.3GB profile onto a USB 3.0 pen drive.

However, I can't seem to find that lightning directory with that specific name (or anything like it) within the extensions subdirectory. All I can find is: gconversation@xulforum.org in that extensions directory.

Any other suggestions?

That is the correct name for the directory. So let's go partial scorched earth.
Take note of all the addons you have installed at help | troubleshooting (in fact list them here too).
With thunderbird shut down, delete every file and directory in the profile that contains the word extensions (extensions.ini, etc)
Start thunderbird
results?
then, install addons one by one.
I disabled all plug-ins a while ago, but anyway, here they are, even though ALL of them have been disabled for anywhere from less than a week to 3 months or more.

Because I've already backed up my profile, I had to disconnect my router prior to starting Tbird, so it wouldn't attempt to D/L any new emails that weren't within that 19.3Gb Profile backup.

Also, I'm running Thunderbird v 38.7.2.

The data that comes up from within Thunderbird, Help | Troubleshooting Information, Application Basics, Enabled Plugins, about:plugins, appears to list the plug-ins for Mozilla Firefox browser, not Thunderbird.

I don't see what these plug-ins for Firefox have to do with the Thunderbird problems, unless they have some sort of memory address range conflict, or something similar, especially when disabled.
As of this moment, I don't want to restart Thunderbird until and unless the issue with Lightning can be resolved, because I don't want to potentially lose any email that may be purged from the respective email servers for numerous email accounts accessed with Thunderbird. Especially with the need to have to back-up the 19.3Gb profile file again.

I just need it to work again. This has gone way beyond time consuming and frustrating.
Once again, all I'm asking for is assistance to be able to access my email and Lightning calendar within Thunderbird 38.7.2

I don't care if I ever upgrade to a newer version of Thunderbird, if it's this problematic.

The only other thing I use, is AVG Ultimate 2016, and the incoming/outgoing virus filters/IP routing for each respective email account that has been well established and working great for many iterations of Thunderbird, since AVG 2014.

FYI: I installed AVG Ultimate 2016 about a month ago, and retained all of the same settings from the prior version of AVG.
Screen capture of AppData Thunderbird directory, specifically showing what's inside of the extensions subdirectory.
Now this is getting even worse than some of the numerous really bad CorelDraw upgrades over the years...
> Once again, all I'm asking for is assistance to be able to access my email and Lightning calendar within Thunderbird 38.7.2

Isn't that what I am doing with you now??
And you are able to now access your mail, correct? AIUI you are now only lacking calendar.

> I had to disconnect my router prior to starting Tbird, so it wouldn't attempt to D/L any new emails that weren't within that 19.3Gb Profile backup.

Please tell me you have imap accounts, not pop. And FWIW, you can start THunderbird offline per https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options so mail will not be downloaded when you start.

Since you didn't find a lightning directory, I'm not longer sure it is a calendar issue.
But unless you start thunderbird without the extensions directory and directives we may never know.

I'm out for most of the rest of the night, but I'm copying someone in a different timezone. He can probably better help you, but note, he will have less patience with digressions.

(you are correct I was not interested in plugins. it's extensions that we are mainly concerned about)
Michael,

Something you can try - another user reported an odd problem that was circumvented in windows with "Run as administrator" when starting Thunderbird (right+click the Thunderbird icon)
Flags: needinfo?(mikebaldwin1)
FWIW, I had this same problem. Turns out I had an Add-On called "Thunderbird Conversations". After disabling that, all worked fine.
Hi,

I have the same problem on 2 different MAc OS X using thundirbird.
The version 38.8.0 works fine but not beyond that one.

It also works fine when I desactivate the "Thunderbird Conversations" plugin.

So the issue comes from this plugin.
There is a plugin for version >38 . The plugin has to be updated manually I don't why.

After using the new plugin 'Thunderbird Conversation" it works fine

https://addons.mozilla.org/eN-US/thunderbird/addon/gmail-conversation-view/
Download, then in Thunderbird >Tool>Plugins > Install a plugin from a file...
https://github.com/protz/thunderbird-conversations/wiki/FAQ
"After upgrading to Thunderbird 38, your addon is not automatically updated -- you're left with Conversations 2.8.1 which does not work with Thunderbird 38. Please hit Tools > Add-ons, make sure Conversations is up to date, and restart Thunderbird for good measure."

(In reply to Michael from comment #3)

I had to install a really old 2015 version 38 I had in my Downloads section,
just to be able to view your email.

Michael,

Is this even an issue anymore since add-ons have changed and newer TB versions have been released? If you could kindly respond so that I can close or keep open this bug.

Michael appears to be gone.
