Steps to reproduce:

Updated Thunderbord to version 45


Actual results:

The button icons along the top (Get Message, Write, Delete, etc) have changes to the same weird/blurred icon. See attached pic.


Expected results:

Button icons should not be blurred and should not be the same.

Richard, can you please advise.

Reporter: Are you using a theme? Does this happen in safe-mode? (Start with attachments turned off, Help menu.)

When I restart in safe-mode all the icons appear and are working correctly.

When I go back to normal mode, then icons get messed up again. If manually disable all the add-ons, the icons are still messed up. Which leads to possible theme issue...

The only theme in the appearance tab is DEFAULT 45. In safe-mode, this theme shows as disabled and the icons are working fine. In normal mode, I can not disable this theme, but since disabling all the add-ons makes no difference, I have assume that DEFAULT 45 theme is probably the problem.

Starting in safe-mode does more things than disabling add-ons and themes, for example it switches off hardware acceleration.

Can you try on a new profile, that is, start
  thunderbird -p or
  thunderbird -profilemanager
with the theme enabled.

Jsherk, please can check if the HW acceleration is enabled, and if yes disable it? Go to Thunderbird > Preferences > Advanced > General and untick "Use hardware acceleration when available".
Safe mode disables also this option.

Hardware acceleration was not ticked and was disabled. I did try to enable it (then restarted) as well, but icon issue remains whether enabled or disabled.

I created a new profile and the icons are working on the new profile.

Switching back to my original profile, the icons go all funny/blurred again.

So then possibly profile related issue then?

Yes, probably. Could you attach the Troubleshooting Informations you get from Help > Troubleshooting Information? Then I can try the settings which are changed on my Mac.

A new profile has all preferences set to default. So you have some settings changed in the original profile (which comes with a big warning that it will void your warranty) and that will cause the problem. We don't have man power to follow up on these issues.

Well I never changed any profile settings as I don't know how to do that! Icons were working fine until previous version.

Okay so after figuring out how to access the preferences with config editor, I scrolled thru them all and searched for something that might be relevant, but did not find anything.

After some more googling, I came across the userChrome.css file.

And there it was... something I had completely forgotten about... back in 2012 I had modified this file to use custom colored icons on Inbox tab and Write tab, which were the only two tabs that had the messed up icons.

Anyways, removing the custom CSS that had been put in to point to the custom icons, fixed the issue and returned the icons to the default ones.

So the issue is resolved.

And just for final historical purposes, the issue I dealt with back in 2012 was replacing TB15 mono-color icons with the colored icons from TB14.

actually, if you use the "failing" profile contents and don't see the problem when using 44 beta http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/44.0b1/mac/en-US/Thunderbird%2044.0b1.dmg then it might be a Core graphics issue affecting Macs

Thanks for letting us know. Yes, userChrome.css is nice for some individual settings, but no guarantee it will work in the next version ;-)
