Thanks for taking the time to report this!
unfortunately this report is not very useful because it does not describe the problem well. If you have time and can still reproduce the problem, please read https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/QA/Bug_writing_guidelines and add a more useful description to this report.
Does the problem still happen if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? (Safe Mode disables extensions and themes, hardware acceleration and some JavaScript stuff in order to exclude some possible reasons for problems. It does not disable plugins which are add-ons.) See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
And does this also happen with a new and empty profile? See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile and http://support.mozilla.org/kb/Managing%20profiles
Flags: needinfo?(raw334)
There is a back arrow to the left of the address bar near the top of the page. It is always a light shade, which normally means that this is an initial page displayed. When you click on a link on the page, it reloads the page with the new link. However the back button is still light in color, and you cannot click on it to go back.
Will try to start in safe mode, but the first method listed on the link does not work (you click on the menu button and nothing appears). Will try alternate method.

Hello Richard, I am not able to reproduce this issue on the current release and the latest nightly build of Firefox.
Version 46.0
Build ID 20160421124000
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0
Version 49.0a1
Build ID 20160503030421
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0
As Andre suggested, Please retest in safe mode and with fresh profile and let us know your finding. If you still encounter this issue, please attach the video of this issue.

Hello Richard,
How exactly are you opening the link? Are you just simply left clicking it or using a combination of Shift + Left Click or Ctrl + Left Click? And is the link opened in the same tab or a new tab/window?
Because if you're by chance opening the link in a new tab or window then it is completely normal for you not to have an active "Back" arrow.
Thanks,
Cipri
