Restarting in Safe Mode allowed double-clicking to open a message in a new window. I then restarted and started disabling Add-Ons one by one. It turns out that Maximize Message Pane 1.1.16 was still installed (no idea how hold that is!) and, once disabled, the problem was resolved. I've removed that Add-On and things are functioning properly.
This does, however, raise the question why Add-Ons clearly not supported in a specific version are still allowed to function. Firefox will disable an Add-On that doesn't explicitly state support for the latest version.
This can be marked resolved. I wasn't sure what resolution type made sense (none of them? maybe Invalid...).
Thank you for the Safe Mode suggestion. I wasn't aware such a feature existed.
