User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Fedora; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0
Build ID: 20160503092831

Steps to reproduce:

Often I copy paste from a password protected web site.
I copy and paste tables from that web page into a thunderbird new message,
and when pasted, thunderbird starts asking for username and password.
It keeps asking hundred of times. It does not matter if I accept the default, or if I hit ESC to cancel it. Often, there is nothing non-text that needs to be pasted anyway, yet thunderbird just keeps asking for password.

Actual results:

keeps asking for username/password

Expected results:

It should have asked once and be done with it

I can't reproduce this issue with Thunderbird 45.1 using a test page I created: https://people.mozilla.org/~mnoorenberghe/tmp/dump_clipboardData.htm I only get one prompt when I use the correct username and password

Can you follow the instructions on that page and see if you get the HTTP auth prompt more than once with a successful login?

I suspect there is text/html contents in the clipboard that are getting referenced when pasted into an HTML editor but perhaps you have more than one HTTP auth realm referenced? You can see what's in the text/html data of the clipboard on my test page too.

Thank you for taking your time with this issue..
Perhaps it only happens if you ESC out the user/password prompt..

Can you please provide a test case that you can reproduce this with?
