Steps how to reproduce with unofficial (from <http://seamonkey.callek.net/contrib/>) German SeaMonkey 2.44 Mozilla/5.0 (en-US Language pack) (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0 Build 20160608085536 (Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit: Compare behavior of several actions opening new TAB with menu 'Edit → Preferences → Browser → Tabbed Browsing - Tab display - Switch to new Tabs opened from link' checked or unchecked "Switch to new Tabs ..." → [ok] 1. Open Browser → This page, do following steps always with checked and one time with unchecked preference 2. Page top left area 'rightlick "Home" - Open link in new Tab » Linked page will open in new Tab [x] Pref: Focus on newly created tab [ ] Pref: Focus stays on old Tab 3. 'rightlick any bookmark - Open link in new Tab » Linked page will open in new Tab [x] Pref: Focus on newly created tab [ ] Pref: Focus stays on old Tab 4. 'rightlick any history item - Open link in new Tab » Linked page will open in new Tab [x] Pref: Focus on newly created tab [ ] Pref: Focus stays on old Tab That all was as expected 5. 'Edit → Preferences → Browser → Internet Search - Search Results - "Open new Tab..." and "Open a Tab ..." checked → [ok]' 6. In Sidebar Search type searchstring → [Search] » Search engine page will open in new Tab [x] Pref: Focus on newly created tab [ ] Pref: Focus stays on old Tab 7. Menu 'File → New → Browser Tab » Search engine page will open in new Tab [x] Pref: Focus on newly created tab [ ] Pref: Focus on newly created tab This is different to results before 8. Switch to MailNews → compose → <f9> (if necessary) to open sidebar → Do tests 1 ... 6 » Results are the same So due to 6. preference is not limited to Tabs opened by links, but due to 7. the preference is not for any newly opened TAB. a) My suggestion: old: "Switch to new Tabs opened from links" new: "Switch to newly opened Tabs"

The search is somewhat special. It seems to just ignore the setting which is what I would expect. If you search for something you would like to have the results available immediately either in the current or a new tab. Same for opening a new tab. If we drop the "opened from links" I and you would probably know what it means but I think we should keep it as a clarification. Maybe name it "opened from web content links"? IanN what do you think?
I'd say if we are going to change it, needs to reflect sidebars are a special case. Not sure web content helps clarify.
Maybe something in brackets after it?

Falguni, I think we need to make our mind up first about how we actually would like to name the item. I better take the good first bug away for now.
This a SeaMonkey bug. If you wan to work on SeaMonkey bugs setting up a dev environment is a bit different. Very simliar to Thunderbird. If you find another SeaMonkey bug shoot me an meail so that I can try to set you up for development or ask in irc://freenode/SeaMonkey
