User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0
Build ID: 20160604131506

Steps to reproduce:

I have Lightning 4.7.1.1 installed on Thunderbird 45.1.1 (automatic updates enabled).

I opened an email that contained an email part plus .ics attachment. The email was send to me from a user of SuiteCRM (latest version 7.6.4) using meeting manager inviting me to participate at a meeting (the email is attached).

Looking at the source code of the email (attached) it looks like a correct example of a MIME email containing a text/plain part and a text/calendar attachment, there is nothing incorrect about the email, but there is something incorrect on how it is displayed.

Actual results:

Clicking on the email and having "Display attachments inline" enabled the Message Reader ONLY displays the meeting NOT the email itself, so I cannot READ the email part nor can I see the links which I need to accept the invite.
When disabling the "Display attachments inline", the email message is displayed but NOT the ics.

Expected results:

Clicking on the email and having "Display attachments inline" enabled the Message Reader SHOULD displays the email text AND the meeting, so I can actually click on the HTML link to accept the invite and participate at the meeting.

I have just tried this on a Fedora 22 installation, using Thunderbird 45.0 and Lightning 4.7 it works as expected, the email AND attachment are displayed together, I can click on the links within the email AND see the attached .ics - so it seems this is windows 7 related.
I have the same problem in Windows 10 with Thunderbird 45.2.0 and Lightning 4.7. The behavior is as follows. If I start Thunderbird, I'll be able to read the mail perfectly. Both the mail body as well as the event are displayed correct. After some time, I assume meanwhile the event was processed, the display change so that only the event is visible and the message body disappeared. A colleagues of mine has also the same problem.

Seems unlikely that it would be win7 related.

In any event, related to bug 505024?

No, its not. I have Lightning installed and it works in Linux as expected but not in Windows.

The problem in my case it shows EITHER the attachment OR the email - not both as it should. Changing the state of the "Display attachments inline" changed what is displayed either attachment OR email.

As Wayne Mery (above) explained it is happening in Windows 10 too, so it probably is windows based and not windows 7 - I can ONLY confirm 7 as I cannot test on 10.
I can confirm this bug with

Ubuntu Linux 16.04 x86_64
vanilla Thunderbird 45.5.1
Lightning 4.7.5.1

Steps used to reproduce:

1. Create new email with text
2. attach an event (that is not in your calendar)
3. save as draft
4. display message -> message text AND event details are shown
5. accept/import event to calendar
6. display message -> message text is missing

Note that if you attach an existing event from your calendar to an email, you never get shown the message text at all when displaying the message.
This bug affect me also, on Ubuntu 18.04, with Thunderbird 52.9.1 (64 bits) (this bug was there for a long time for me, I didn't realized there was someone speaking in e-mail with .ics for months).

When I display such en e-mail, if "Show> Show attachment in message" is activated, then I don't see the e-mail.
If this option is deactivated, the e-mail appear.

I also have lightning, but I never see the e-mail, even if I don't accept the invitation yet, I don't see the mail (as opposed to other people in this bug report).
I can confirm the bug on Ubuntu 18.04 with Thunderbird 60.2.1 (64 bits), Lightning 6.2b6 (since Lightning 5.4 stopped working after the last Thunderbird update). The e-mail message disappear when I add event to the calendar. When I remove the event from the calendar, e-mail massege appear again.

I can confirm the bug using Windows 10 and Thunderbird 78.4.0 (64-bit), with built-in Lightning. The mail itself is shown only if "Display Attachments Inline" is disabled, which prevents Thunderbird from showing the event details and response buttons.

I can confirm this with 32 bit V78 on Win 10, though in my case a bit worse as "Display Attachments Inline" makes no difference.

At Mozilla support sfhowes suggested a workaround that semi-works: In Config. editor, double-click mailnews.display.show_all_body_parts_menu to true, and then set View/Message Body As to All Body Parts. This does make the message visible, though in a kudgy format. However, it destroys the readability of many other emails, so it is not a permanent fix.

I entered this as a new bug 1677795 and I've now marked that closed as a duplicate of this.

This is potentially serious for me as it stops my customers who use TB from reading messages I send them.

I'd be happy to forward one of the problem emails to anyone who wants to experiment. andrew@livenowlovenowhealnow.co.uk

I can also confirm this bug on 78.6.0 on macOS.

This bug hides the contents of an email when an ics attachment is present. Unknowingly I missed a lot of messages due to this.

The primary usage of Thunderbird is to be able to read and write emails. However, this bug makes it impossible (beside the mailnews.display.show_all_body_parts_menu workaround) to read some emails. So I think this bug should be regarded as high priority.

I can also confirm this bug exist on Windows 7 and Windows 10. I used Thunderbird 78.9.0 x64 with Ligting enabled. The same behaviour occurs.

I can confirm, when I forward message containing ics and add comment on a top of this message, this comment won't be displayed in Thunderbird (message was forwarded from GMail, I don't know if it matters).

However similar message forwarded from Roundcube was parsed with comment by the same version of Thunderbird. It shows also ics content, but doesn't show additional buttons related to event.

I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 20.04, Thunderbird 78.8.1 (64-bit). This bug is quite annoying and severe. Please change the status of the bug to confirmed and increase its severity.

Severity: normal → S2
OS: Windows 7 → All
Priority: -- → P3

I can confirm this bug on Windows 10, Thunderbird 78.13.0. I'm using the workaround of disabling inline atachments
