Details
Need to see what's possible here, but the idea is that the splitter can be dragged to the left to crop the text, then maybe at some point snap to just the icons, and then either clip or snap-per-icon when dragging further left.

The splitter that would be placed where currently the separator is, to the right of the home button.

I think Firefox/Toolkit toolbar customization has something like this - at least there's a resizable splitter between their URL and search bars. Marking dependency on bug 394288 because of that.
