Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.8+) Gecko/20020227
BuildID: 2002022700

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install JDK 1.3 from Sun
2. Symlink the plugin shared library into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
3. Restart mozilla
4. Go to about:plugins

Actual Results: The Java plugin is not shown.
Sites that contain applets, e.g. java.sun.com, pop up the plugin download dialog
box.

Expected Results: The Java plugin should be displayed.
Sites that have applets, e.g. java.sun.com, should run the applets.

More details:

I have a RedHat 7.2 system with kernel 2.4.9-13smp and:

mozilla-2002022620_trunk-0_rh7.i386.rpm
mozilla-mail-2002022620_trunk-0_rh7.i386.rpm
mozilla-psm-2002022620_trunk-0_rh7.i386.rpm
jdk-1.3.1_02.i386.rpm from http://java.sun.com

Symlinked
/usr/java/jdk1.3.1_02/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
to
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Restarted mozilla. Went to about:plugins. My other plugins are
shown (nullplugin, flash and RealPlayer) but no Java. Cannot use
any applets and http://java.sun.com gives the dialog box to download the plugin.

This also happened to me with:

- mozilla 0.9.8 RPM from ftp.mozilla.org
- Java2 plug-in from www.netscape.com
- plugin for Netscape 4 from Sun
(/usr/java/jdk1.3.1_02/jre/plugin/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so)
- plugin for Netscape 4 from Netscape
(/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/java2/plugin/i386/ns4/javaplugin.so)

I tried this by running mozilla as root and as a regular user. Same results. I
cannot use any Java. Perhaps I did something wrong?
I think you have found exactly the same problem as me (bug 126965).
For the moment, I am not able to figure out what is happening.
both bugs should go INVALID - just install Java the right way
duping this against 126965
