User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0
Build ID: 20160604131506

Steps to reproduce:

Tried to send email to mail list "Clean Joke List".

Actual results:

Not a valid email address

Expected results:

sent message to each member of list
Summary: Thunderbird no longer recognizes email lists → Thunderbird no longer recognizes email lists. Error "invalid recipient"
Looks like bug 1296535, but that was reported for current development builds (TB 51.0a1) and shouldn't affect TB 45.x releases. Which build did you observe this issue on?

The About window shows 45.2.0, but My version almost always updates automatically to whatever is the latest version. Could there have been a version rollback that only partially worked?

Harold Doty
Works for me in TB 45.2. Please check the mailing list contains valid recipients.

Bug 1296535 was about the "Send" button not even being available when a mailing list was entered.
When I try the Send Unsent Messages from the menu, the error now looks different.

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded:
5.1.2 The recipient address <Clean Joke List> is not a valid RFC-5321
5.1.2 address. 6sm12446435otx.23 - gsmtp.
Please check the message recipient "Clean Joke List" and try again.
<Clean Joke List> should have never made it to the server. Lists should be replaced by individual recipients.

Do this:
Compose your message with the mailing list.
File > Send Later.
Inspect the message in the Outbox. Look at the message source. What does the To: field say?

For Jorg K to see. Substitution not occuring as expected.

Works for me in 45.2, substitution *is* occurring.
Please use TB without any add-ons, that is in safe mode, see Help menu.
Does that fix it?

Summary: Thunderbird no longer recognizes email lists. Error "invalid recipient" → Thunderbird doesn't expand mailing list leading to server error "invalid recipient"
I composed a message in safe mode and tried to send it. Same error.

Clean Joke List <"Clean Joke List"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.
Something wrong with your mailing list. It doesn't get expanded. Where do the quotes come from?
My mailing lists look like:
Christmas Message 2009 <Christmas Message 2009>
Check the definition of the mailing list.
Yes, I tested it, I created a list with description |"clean jokes"| with the quotes and it fails.
Remove the quotes from the description.

The error in comment #8 is an error generated by TB. I have no idea how you managed to sent the message and got a server error in comment #4.

There is something you're not telling us.

Summary: Thunderbird doesn't expand mailing list leading to server error "invalid recipient" → Thunderbird doesn't expand mailing list if description contains quotes.
There are no quotation marks in any of the Address Book list names, and they worked just fine until recently.
Open each address book and check the Description. Remove the quotes there.

Please explain where the quotes in
Clean Joke List <"Clean Joke List">
(comment #8) come from. Show me a screen shot of the properties of that mailing list.

The quotes may have been added because there are spaces in what's considered the recipient's address.
I see no quotes, see comment #9. Have you tried it?
Yes, just right now. I've created a list "test me" with a couple of e-mail addresses and entered that list in 45.2.0 on Windows 7. Using *TAB* the list expands to

   To: test me <test me>

I didn't want to send this, thus simply saved as draft. It's still like that (i.e, no quotes) in the *displayed* message, but View > Message Source shows:

   To: test me <"test me">

now. So, reproducible with a fairly vanilla profile.
Yes, but if you edit the draft and send it (to the outbox), the list is expanded.

So only if the quotes are *in the description* I get the local error from comment #8. I haven't been able to ship the unsubstituted mailing list name out to the server to get the error from comment #4.

So, someone please reproduce the problem and I'm happy to reopen this.

I feel like I am wasting my time here since the reporter hasn't given clear steps to reproduce the problem and only hands out one morsel of information at the time. There was also never any talk of editing a saved draft, which still works.
There are no quotation marks in the list properties, and never have been. The program must be adding them.
I am sorry that you have so little patience for a bug that is causing a failure for address book lists. I did not write the program, and have no way of knowing what information you need to be able to track the bug down, without your input.

All I know for sure is that this "feature" is new to me, and I used to purchase Netscape prior to it becoming Thunderbird. What Microsoft did to them was disgusting, and a test of how well big money can overrule reason.

Yes, I have so little patience since what you're presenting doesn't hang together.

If you define a description, it features in the angle brackets, like you can see in my picture.

Now, the picture you attached shows:
List Name: Clean Joke List
Description: People who enjoy light humor.

You're still haven't told us which add-on your running or what you're doing to get
Clean Joke List <"Clean Joke List">.
I simply cannot reproduce the problem you're reporting.

If you want this looked at, please do the following:
1) Start Thunderbird with the -p option and create a new profile. Configure an e-mail account.
2) Create a few contacts and the mailing list.

If the problem still happens, I'm interested. Are you really using TB 45.2?
