1297088 - Thunderbird don't handle some UTF8 characters of filenames after moving from another system

Steps to reproduce:

I used MS Windows 7 and I save all Thunderbird files from "C:\Users\myName\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird" and copy them to my new computer wit Windows 8.1. Certainly I rename Thunderbird profile default directory for new instalation.


Actual results:

Most of email folders start to work properly but few of them become empty and twice. For example '2.ZABU.účet' was listed twice and both was empty. After first start of Thunderbird it creates new hash named folders. I notice that cause is some UTF8 characters. When I check and rename all subfolders 'Profiles/*.default/Mail/*' to ASCII only characters (before first start of Thunderbird) all my emails was recreated. I can surely say that  'č' (C48D) and 'Č' (C48C) characters cause this problem and probably also  'ľ' (C4BE), 'Ľ' (C4BD).


Expected results:

I hope that it is clear. Operating system is able to handle UTF8 named directories and files and Thunderbird should able also but it renames them to any hash and therefore lost coherence and emails.

I can confirm this issue to still be the case.
I did have the same issue, where there were Greek characters in the folder names with the same effects described by the OP.
The temporary solution is, to set the language for non-utf compatible programs in windows settings (Administrative Regional Settings) to the language of the folder names, in my case Greek. However, If someone has Folder names in different languages, this will not work.

The solution is to fix TB's file handling to be UTF-8 compatible.
