Steps to reproduce:
Click a message.
Actual results:
The font gets from bold to normal as if becoming read. When I then click another message, the original message gets bold again.
Expected results:
Message should stay read.

Works fine for me. Can you try in safe mode, that is, with add-ons disabled (see Help menu).

All extensions and add-ons are disabled.

I read a message, it becomes read, I click on another message, it becomes read, the first message becomes unread. What is going on here?

Automatically marking the message read is off. Marking a message read with shortcut (M). After a while new messages have come and the previously read message has now changed back to unread.
