mDOMExpandoSet was supposed to make things simpler, but we ended up with some of these objects in the JS holders hash too so it didn't really work out. I don't think it makes much sense anymore in the current state and it's just confusing.
Is this more urgent than P3, Peter ("we'll get to it when we get to it")?
