What did you do? ================ 1. Refereshed the firefox profile 2. uninstalled all the extensions and plugins 3. updated to latested available FF 45.3.0 What happened? ============== video on twitter.com say "This browser does not support video playback." What should have happened? ========================== Normally the video plays by default. one such example link is https://twitter.com/education_delhi/status/777016319812079616 Is there anything else we should know? ======================================

the file was downloaded to my localhost, and I was not able to play the file in "Totem Movie Player" which gave me an error "The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-4 AAC decoder plugin which is not installed." but the same file, I was able to play in VLC player (which is the default player on my machine)

cannot get it, what shall I do next, so as to solve the problem.
Also after the testing I have installed "gstreamer-ffmpeg" after which I am able to play the video on my local machine in "Totem Movie Player" also. But still the video is not playing from twitter.com
Previous versions of Firefox used gstreamer but 45 should use libav/ffmpeg when it is available. What version of libavcodec do you have installed?

problem You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
There are two versions of libavcodec, namely ffmpeg and the libav fork. gstreamer-ffmpeg should pull in ffmpeg which should include libavcodec which is why I assume you've already got libavcodec. Firefox will use 53-57 as per: https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-esr45/search?q=libavcodec.so.&redirect=true I'm not sufficiently familiar with RPM based distros to know if there are any tricks with getting the needed .so files in your ld library path.
I have gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.11-2.el6.x86_64 installed, and so as per you I must be having libavcodec installed and my FF version is 45.3.0. Thus as per you everything should be fine and working, but then what is the problem that I cannot play twitter.com video's

You can probably figure it out using: # find / -name libavcodec.so\*
I'm seeing this problem on Ubuntu with Firefox 49. All videos on Twitter front page say "The media could not be played."
