User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:48.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/48.0
Build ID: 20160823121617
Steps to reproduce:
I did nothing. Thunderbird automatically upgraded and one of my Thunderbird email accounts has quit working. All I need to do is click on inbox and I get the message "Mail Server emmebrown51@gmail.com is not an IMAP4 mail server. I have no idea what this means.
Actual results:
I can click on my other Thunderbird account "my2poochesbooks@gmail.com" and everything works just fine it is only my main account "emmebrown51@gmail.com" that I can not receive or send out any mail because emmebrown51@gmail is not an IMAP4 server.
Expected results:
Clicking on my inbox for the (emmebrown51) account I should receive my mail on Thunderbird but the send box doesn't work either. I get the message that for security reasons gmail will not send or get my messages because of an out of date app that Thunderbird has. I have no idea what that app is.

I have never seen this, but I think there might be two causes for this problem:
- Maybe you haven't specified for Gmail to allow IMAP Access. Log in to mail.google.com and go to (Gear icon) Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP and check that IMAP is (still?) enabled…
- Maybe you use the wrong/old authentication method and you haven't configured Gmail to allow access for less secure (yuck!) apps. Either log in to mail.google.com and go to https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps and turn on access for less secure apps or go to Thunderbird -> Options -> Account Settings -> [your gmail account] -> Server Settings and change the authentication method to OAuth2.

Subject: Re: [Bug 1304481] cannot get or send mail - see "Mail Server xxx@gmail.com is not an IMAP4 mail server"
I have tried both suggestions and this message comes up: The current operation on inbox did not succeed. The mail server for account emmebrown51@gmail.com responded: unknown command rs5mb6778810iec.
I have another account with google mail and everything is fine with it. I have checked and the settings for my2poochesbooks@gmail.com are all the same as emmebrown51@gmail.com. Why one account and not the other?

This is a support problem and not a TB bug. We have millions of users using TB with Gmail.
Please note: Bugzilla is NOT a support forum. It is a tracking system for bugs in Mozilla products.

Marie, have you been able to figure out why one Gmail account worked and the other one didn't?
"Mail Server xxx@gmail.com is not an IMAP4 mail server" seems to indicate that the configuration wasn't right, since xxx@gmail.com is not a server name but an e-mail address.

After trying every which way to figure out what was wrong *I got up one morning and it was working*. Why the one account wouldn't work and gave such a weird reason and my other account with gmail that I got my mail through Thunderbird worked just fine. I have absolutely no idea what was going on.
