I have noticed this problem on several sites, using both Milestone build 0.9.9 and the nightly build from 13-mar-2002. It may be helpfull to note that my resolution is currently set to 800X600. I've created a testcase, which I hope is helpfull. The conditions to create this bug seem quite complex. Nested tables, blockquotes and bold tags all seem necessary. The major contributor however seems to be setting cellspacing in the child table to a high value, though in the origional HTML cellspacing was only set to 5, there were other factors I have since removed. While the nested table lays out properly, the parent table seems to require much more space horozontally than would otherwise seem necessary.

WFM, 2002-03-13-03 trunk on Windows 98 SE. It renders exactly as in IE6 for me. I fail to see any bug here, isn't the "extra" horizontal space just the default BLOCKQUOTE margin?
I have to agree with Mats, thats why I added the background colors, whats the issue here. The blockquotes margin cannot be squeezed http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/layout/html/document/src/html.css#61
Regarding the blockquote margin forcing the expansion of the table. I agree, and will more thoroughly investigate next time. I'm going to attempt to change the status to INVALID.
