User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0 Build ID: 20160920074044 Steps to reproduce: send short mails from various accounts with various smtp servers, as usual. Thunderbird 45.3.0 Linux 4.4.0-42-generic #62-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 23:11:45 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Actual results: mails can not be sent, a message box tells 'connected to smtp server...' but seems to be not true and nothing happening and then after quite long seconds message errors saying : message can not sent because connection to outgoing erver (smtp) expired. Please try again'. Many tries without plugin and safe mode. Googled with no relevant answers. Wlan checked and OK. Internet is working, receiving mails in Thunderbird OK. Sending mails from same wlan/box/IP with some other computers (Mac OSX) and same accounts/parameters works fine. The last new thing in TB was - my be - using PGP as automatically proprosed by TB to sign mails (RAS keys generated many days before without trouble). Expected results: mails to be sent !
Typically this kinds of thing is not Thunderbird. What is ISP? yahoo?

(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, NI for questions) from comment #1) > Typically this kinds of thing is not Thunderbird. > What is ISP? yahoo? Not at all. It applies to diiferent ISP, such smtp at some university or private domain servers such as gandhi or so. The final way I used to solve was to export mails and contacts and reinstall TB. So, it looks like a TB issue, which is not new as I have seen on old posts here and there.
(In reply to fred from comment #2) > The final way I used to solve was to export mails and contacts and reinstall TB. Culprit in such phenomenon is Firewall software or Anti-Virus software in many cases. In many such software, White List method is used for applications and its versions, and default is "Prohibit" in almost all cases. IF SMTP relevant phenomenon, see User Story of bug 402793 and get SMTP log(NSPR log) and check log content using Text Editor, please. What request/SMTP command is requested by Thunderbird and what response is returned from SMTP server? What kind of fault is seen in SMTP log? Wrong connection request by Thunderbird? What is evidence of that your problem was caused by flaw in Thunderbird code? Here is bugzilla.mozilla.org to report actual bug to developer/to resolve actual bug, instead of support forum. Please do at least minimum problem determination before opening bug.
Fred, If you full set of steps to reproduce, then please update the bug
