Details
If you watch a thread, then in most cases you can see the cute little "watched"
icon next to the first message in the thread (ie, over the "twisty")
However, if you are using "View Unread", (or looking at the first message in
what is soon to become a thread) and there is only one single message in this
thread visible, no such icon is displayed. There is no indication that this
single message is in a watched thread. Further, selecting "Watch Thread" on
this message has no effect - the visible state of the message remains unchanged.
Note that when there is only 1 message in the thread visible, Mozilla
(correctly) does not display an outliner twisty for collapsing and expanding
the thread. My guess is that this is why the watch icon does not show up for
these messages.

Oops - fixing summary as some words were left in and obviously scrolled to the
right :)
Summary: Watched threads don't always show as watched in unread view → Watched threads don't always show as watched
This is a duplicate of bug 122640.
Also, we don't put up the icon in a flat sort view such as View Unread would
typically be.
