I added this way back for external performance alert generation, but it wasn't even used at the time. Looking at new relic, it appears the only user of this *endpoint* in the last 7 days was :emorley when he was looking for a datasource memory leak (bug 1312007). ;) Let's take out this custom behavior and simplify things a bit.
