I was going to add a screenshot, too, but it wouldn't show anything this one didn't, looks just like that for me, too.

There was a Gmail app update issued on Oct19, which might be around when this started happening.
Keywords: bug-quality
AFAIK it was a bug in the Gmail app for Android. I haven't seen the issue recently.
