TB should never compact folders, or even offer a user that option, while downloading messages, and vice versa.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0 Build ID: 20161025164528 Steps to reproduce: While first running TB (and thus mail was auto downloading via POP), TB offered to save disk space by compacting folders and I clicked ok. Actual results: Some messages were lost. Expected results: TB should absolutely prevent this by having each of these operations lock a flag (mutex?) which blocks the other (and also blocks even a prompt suggesting that either be done) until the first one is finished.
