So this was a dragandrop add-on created issue, but the behavior of FF IMO was still a bug. I removed the add-on. Was able to get the browser to work again. Also able to retrieve my bookmarks (phew). So - let me know if you want more detail.
Add-on issue. It's common when some add-ons become incompatible after a new release. To solve the issue, you can start in safe mode to remove/disable the faulty add-on. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode As back-up, you should consider use Firefox Sync: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/sync/ In the future, it's better to use the official support forum rather than Bugzilla for any support request: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions

Thank you, Loic. Appreciate the reply. Yes, I would have reported it elsewhere but it was not at all clear where or how on mozilla.org.
