I was able to track these 500s down on the server logs. However, there are no details in the server logs indicating what type of failure this is due to. That is most troubling and possibly points to a sign in Mercurial not logging properly. I've found similar HTTP 500 errors that predated the Mercurial 4.0 upgrade on Thursday. So while the timing of these is a bit suspicious, correlation may not imply causation.

The failures a few days ago were almost certainly related to bug 1329746. Anyway, since this doesn't appear to be a persistent problem, I'm going to mark this WORKSFORME.
