Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird 51.0b1 (64-bit)

“Place a copy in:” default setting for IMAP and POP accounts

Account Settings → Copies & Folders → When sending messages, automatically:

Suggestions:

For IMAP accounts, default should be UNselected “Place a copy in:” (bug as currently is Selected)
For POP3 accounts, default should be kept as Selected “Place a copy in:” (current configuration is correct)

IMAP accounts (tested with like Hotmail and Gmail) with IMAP currently create 2 of the same email in the “Sent” and “Sent Mail” for Hotmail and Gmail folders, respectively.

You don't say why you think having this selected is a bug. For this, and for other reasons I don't understand what this bug is about. It sounds like you have problems with hotmail and gmail. Or perhaps I just need to see it worded differently.

Please give one example, state the mailprovider, state what you currently see, and why you want it to be different

Current setting is valid for POP accounts.

Bug is only valid for IMAP accounts.
MailProvider: Gmail, Hotmail, Zoho
What currently see is that the Sent folder contains 2 copies of every email that is sent.

This could be because the Thunderbird setting Selected setting places a copy in the Sent folder and the IMAP function downloads a copy from the mailprovider
