Hi Karl,
I tested this issue on Mac OS X 10.10 with FF release 50 and FF Nighlty 53.0a1 2016-12-13) and I can't reproduce this issue. From your bug report I see that you use FF 49, can you please update and try to retest this? Thanks

Yes sure.
Using Firefox 53.0a1 (2016-12-18) (64-bit)
on macos Sierra 10.12.1 (16B2555)
with Mail.app Version 10.1 (3251)
1. Open mail.app, create new mail.
2. Go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
3. Click on the top-left Firefox logo
4. Maintain Click and drag and drop to the logo to the new mail window.
Still nothing.
But I tried on Notes.app (I get the image) and on Terminal.app (I get the link), so I guess it has to do with Mail.app and not Firefox.
Sorry for the noise. I will report it to Mail.app folks.
