This would require help by someone with a clue about favicon structure/design ;) but I think that it would be nice if the default bugzilla install included a favicon. The image in the URL field is GPL (from the bug-buddy source, originally, I think) and might be a good starting place for any artist caring to look at something that would be a nice default for bugzilla.
Actually, I'm glad that you filed this bug, because I had a really good idea about how to use favicons in Bugzilla. You see, I often find myself with a number of open bugs (in tabs or windows) and I can only see the bug numbers. As I can't remember the number, I have to look through a lot of them to find the bug I want next. If Bugzilla made the favicon (and perhaps the page background also) one of e.g. twenty colours, depending on the last two digits of the number (so it's constant for a bug), I could say "I wanted a bug, and I know it was a green one" and look for green square favicons. Or you could also use symbols. Normally, there'd only be one or two of that colour open. This would obviously be a pref, as I can see it might not appeal to everyone. What do people think? Gerv
Huh. Interesting suggestion. I don't think I'd use it, given my specific tabbing habits, but... I could definitely see it being useful for some people, and possibly even for me.
Gerv, I'd had an almost identical thought brewing, but instead was planning on using different bug icons. Had compiled a list of about 30 "bugs" that were fairly distinct, but was only planning to use 25, and map the bug number to number mod 25. I believe that these could be a useful mnemonic, and might even be worth querying against. "I know it was a dragonfly bug, but was it targeted at 1.0 or not?" I kind of relished the thought of also having a squashed bug icon for bugs that were resolved, closed, etc.
Taking it even further, we could make it possible for each bug to be assigned a favicon, either one chosen from a list of available icons or a custom one.
Three thoughts: 1) There is only so much data you can usefully convey in a 16x16 icon in a tab- I think the UI people might scream at some of these ideas :) This is a really hard, practical limit on the usefulness of any of this stuff. 2) If we insist on ignoring (1) ;) it might be useful to sync this with the patch for bug categories that is around somewhere- each category might have a different favico associated with it by default. 3) All I really wanted when I filed this bug was to see if we could persuade someone with a few skills to make a simple, correct .ico file. That's all I want in the world is art that I can backport ;)

Not a duplicate; that one is 'bugzilla.mozilla should show the same icon as everywhere else in .m.o. domain' while this one is 'bugzilla, the software, should have a default favico that is not related to mozilla.org.'

What happened to the bugzilla logo?
cc:ing Dawn, who recently did work with Bugzilla icons. Dawn, is there an icon we can convert into a favicon? We got a lot of entries in our error log for clients looking for favicon.ico and not finding it.
Gentlemen, does your Bugzilla still need multiple category-related icons? [Bug 132383 --> my votes]
How about something really simple. Could we add a distinct site icon for each of the major interfaces? Being able to distinguish tabs with buglists from tabs with bugs would be a big win for any users that run with a couple of buglists open and a dozen or so more tabs (where the title truncates down to just "Bug..." for both buglist and show bug pages). It shouldn't be too hard to plug <link REL="icon" HREF="buglist.png" TYPE="image/png"> and <link REL="icon" HREF="show_bug.png" TYPE="image/png"> into the respective templates. Even if the default distro uses the same image (if we lack graphic design resources) at least installations could easily customize.
It is really hard to make out buggy at that size, I'm afraid, particularly with the background. :/
Actually, it's not that bad. I like it. :)

This bug is retargetted to Bugzilla 3.2 for one of the following reasons: - it has no assignee (except the default one) - we don't expect someone to fix it in the next two weeks (i.e. before we freeze the trunk to prepare Bugzilla 3.0 RC1) - it's not a blocker If you are working on this bug and you think you will be able to submit a patch in the next two weeks, retarget this bug to 3.0. If this bug is something you would like to see implemented in 3.0 but you are not a developer or you don't think you will be able to fix this bug yourself in the next two weeks, please *do not* retarget this bug. If you think this bug should absolutely be fixed before we release 3.0, either ask on IRC or use the "blocking3.0 flag".

Comment on attachment 300398 [details] [diff] [review] Favicon Patch v1 >+ <link rel="shortcut icon" href="skins/standard/header/bz3.ico" IMO, the favicon should not depend on the skin choosen but should be specific to the installation. So I think it should be renamed favicon.ico (instead of bz3.ico) and be moved into bugzilla/images/, i.e. href="images/favicon.ico".

justdave has to tell us if we yet have the legal power to distribute that image.
still waiting for final confirmation on that. It's in the works though.
Bugzilla 3.2 is now frozen. Only enhancements blocking 3.2 or specifically approved for 3.2 may be checked in to the 3.2 branch. If you would like to nominate your enhancement for Bugzilla 3.2, set "blocking3.2" tp "?", and either the target milestone will be changed back, or the blocking3.2 flag will be granted, if we will accept this enhancement for Bugzilla 3.2.
Target Milestone: Bugzilla 3.2 → Bugzilla 4.0
Comment on attachment 300417 [details] favicon icon v1 Yes, that looks good, and it's different from the bugzilla.org favicon, so that's fine. We still have to get legal power to distribute the image, however.

Comment on attachment 300416 [details] [diff] [review] Favicon Patch v2 Yeah, this looks fine. I was thinking that it should be skinnable, but no--on a single installation, all skins should have the same favicon.

We got copyright clearance, go ahead and put it on the branch. :-)
