That's not very much - not enough to cause a performance issue. And also too low for Thunderbird to actually be indexing messages :(

Some questions:
What folder (or folders) is being indexed?
How many seconds was normal to display a message, and how many now? Is it 100% consistent?
How long have you been using Sierra?
What happens if you reinstall 45.5.1?

you can find 45.5.1 in the directory structure at https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/
Thanks. The indexing was still not complete even after 24 hours. Now I switched off the realtime virus scanner (F-Secure). This speeds up the indexing tremendously. And I see also Thunderbird using much more CPU (varying, but around 60%). I will wait till indexing finishes and check Thunderbird perfomance again with and without real time virus scanning
Indeed, F-Secure on Mac can cause problems. It should NOT be scanning Thunderbird profile.
Complain to the vendor :)
