User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:50.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/50.0
Build ID: 20161208153507
Steps to reproduce:
Connect to an IRC channel and send a message to nickserv
Actual results:
The screen reader didn't say Nickserv's reply automatically
Expected results:
The screen reader (NVDA in my case) should have soijeb Bucjserv's reply automatically, even if the channel's window was active.
This doesn't happen in Intantbird, where pms are spoken automatically

This is probably due to the Thunderbird UI re-using the same element for each conversation? Any thoughts Florian? (I don't know a ton about our interaction with screen readers.)

I wonder if enabling notifications in TB would help here as a workaround? Do those get read out?

That could be the reason, yes. Instantbird won't show (and so I assume) read new private messages if a channel is currently selected, so I assume whatever gets read is the content of a notification.

I don't know. I focus the chat window of a channel, send a private message using "/msg" in that same window, and my message and the reply / replies are read automatically. I think it only happens when the window of the recipient is already open.

In Thunderbird Preferences->Chat, do you have "show a notification" checked? And "With sender and message preview"?
