Steps to reproduce:

Opened Thunderbird 53.0a2 in a test profile
Created a Mozilla IRC account
Connected to the Mozilla IRC account
Joined a chat channels #thunderbird, #maildev



Actual results:

No MOTD or conversations appeared
Channels and Participants appeared in the proper places
Logbot for #maildev shows I was able to post 


Expected results:

Should have been able to see the MOTD's and conversations
