Steps to reproduce:

It seems as if Mozilla is doing everything it can to stop addon development.
First step was mandatory signing which had done nothing for security as the immediately discovered "exploit" is still working (https://forum.mozilla-russia.org/viewtopic.php?id=70326). And without it working I wouldn't be able to use new versions of FF at all, because I depend on unsigned addons.
Now FireFox is killing the whole idea of full control over browser by extensions: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1199718 (WONTFIXed), https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/5qjzie/i_cannot_continue_working_on_my_addons_anymore_im/, https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2016/11/23/add-ons-in-2017/
Security is a false narrative, because the whole idea of protecting the browser when the whole user machine has been contaminated by a virus is ridiculous at best.
Other justification may be cutting down costs of addons store maintenance. And that's true, if there are less addons with less functions, the cost of maintaining the store goes down.
WebExtensions with native.js was a solution that would've made sure most addons are easy to check and special ones with native.js are still allowed.
Full control over browser by addons is by far the most important feature of FireFox. Without it FireFox would just be Chrome with more bugs.
