Details
When I via Windows change the password to my mailserver, Mozilla are having BIG problems. When I Start Mozilla Mail it seems to start 5 connections to my IMAP server (due to the pref max_cached_connections?) I've used Password Manager to save the password so the password dialog doesn't come up. The connections then all failes because of bad password giving me the "login incorrect" dialog 5 times. I'm never presented with the "Enter Password" dialog. BTW: the "check_all_imap_folders_for_new" pref is false The BIG problems is that because of this login retry of mozilla my Exchange account is LOGOUT! 3 bad password attemts means account logout! Mozilla should detect the bad login and then ask me for a password before just seding 5 bad password login tries. v20020325

The same situation (more or less) is with POP3 accounts. It kind of similiar to IMAP case so I entered my comments here. Steps to reproduce: 1) Store password for your POP account. 2) Change this password and leave old one in Password Manager. 3) Check your mail on this account. *** Actual results When you chceck mail next time Mozilla displays a box informing that autorization has failed (which is still better than IMAP case). *** Expected results Mozilla should display failure info and allow user to provide new password.

confirmed solaris8, several recent nightlies. Not testing it on current 1.1 because my mailserver admins are sick of re-enabling my account. Platform/OS -> all/all perhaps? In fact its worse than the original report, this causes the NT domain account to be completely locked out. Assuming the connection to the mail server has been made ok, an authentication failure MUST preempt any retries or other logins to the same server until the user has entered a new password. Workaround: Firstly make sure you never reset the password when mozilla is running. Next, after resetting the password, start moz but dont open a mailnews window yet. Use PSM to 'forget' the stored imap password. Finally open up mailnews and you should get a password dialog where you can tell mozilla to remember your new password.

1.3 beta (2002121215). I got all the problems described in the initial bug. More problems: Mozilla preseneted me 4 login failed dialogs and never asked for password. I (after a minute or two) found how to remove the password for this accound from password manager. Now I got the password prompt, typed it in. Login failed. Mozilla continued to ask for password and say 'login failed'. Mozilla did not give detailed error message reported by server - 'The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to'. It just says 'login failed.' So I thought that I am typing bad password. Only when I decided to check using OE, I got the real error message. VERY, VERY BAD. 1. It should connect/try to login/report error only once. 2. It should ask for password. Giving 'login failed' message without asking password is WRONG! 3. It should provide detailed error, so user don't try to type password when his/her account is locked.

Found similar behavior on a Linux system connecting to MS Exchange server via IMAP with Mozilla 1.2.1 but NOT 1.1. I seem to remember it happening in versions previous to 1.1 as well. 1. Change password. 2. Start Mozilla Mail & Newsgroups 3. Get four Login Failed messages but no opportunity to enter new password. 4. MS Exchange account is now locked.

Duplication of bug 182362

Oddly enough, I agree. bug 182362 has a better bug report, more comments, and more votes, so I'm going to do the unorthodox thing and mark this bug as a duplicate of that one. Plus, bug 182362 comment #13 gives a better workaround (I have used this several times. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 182362 ***
