I am not sure when this started happening, but it looks like videos are being paused when we open a new tab on Nightly. We shouldn't do that.

See also these two linked bugs - Youtube and iPlayer stop playing for me after a few minutes in background. While Youtube might or might not be doubtful, at least for the BBC iPlayer this certainly shouldn't happen. I can't reproduce this everywhere, though: This video e.g. (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9irIhwYmRqxTHBMa0RrX3Q2NE0/edit?pli=1) plays back fine even if I send that Firefox instance into background immediately after starting playback.

Fennec throttles timeouts in background tabs and player runs out of buffers. See bug 1334825 comment 3.
