I have exactly the same problem. When I import old Netscape profile, it isn't
retained; when I make new profiles, including default user or others, they
aren't remembered on next restart of Mozilla. The profiles still exist in the
Mozilla folder created by the Profile Manager in my docs folder. I am using an
iBook with OS 9.2 installed on a separate partition from OS X. I am running
Mozilla in the OS 9 partition.
Each time I start Mozilla, there are no profiles listed.

You might try deleting your registry.dat or appreg.dat (?) file.
Warning: be careful. Deleting this file will prevent you from accessing your
existing profiles. You will have to create all new profiles.

confirming based on 3 dupes of this bug. Someone appears to have broken
something in the Mac OS 9 version. I expect we will need to locate a common link
between the reporters, as I have never actually seen this myself.

So what is this bug? Are you saying that no Macintosh user of Mozilla has been
able to create a profile that works in successive sessions since 0.9.9?

From my experience, you are correct.

I am having similar problems.
See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160308
for my testing.
Are you also finding that Mozilla (mine is 1.1 - build 2002072203) is not retaining window size or placement?

In bug 160308, comment #7, Alan states:
I just discovered something that might relate.
Evidently Mozilla stores the User profiles in the "Documents:Mozilla:Profiles"
folder.
If you "Convert a profile" it makes a user folder in
"Documents:Mozilla:Profiles" that is named " " (space or nothing, I can't tell)
The next time I start M1.1 and convert another profile, i get a folder in
"Documents:Mozilla:Profiles" by the name of "-1". Next is "-2" and so on.
Alan, do you have more than one migratable profile? I.E. Do you get a dialog
asking which profile to migrate, or does it automatically migrate your profile
because there is only one to migrate? I don't know if this matters or not, but
it might be important.
This seems to plant the ball squarely in Profile Migration's court. Updating
summary and re-assigning.

I have given up on Mozilla. (I was using version 1.0.0) I decided to try out
Netscape 6 - I had the same problem - not saving profile or any settings. What I
discovered:
Go to the hard drive>Documents>Mozilla>Profiles. Trashed the 'name'user folders
(there were many). Close the windows. Open Netscape Profile Manager(Netscape
can not be launched). Enter the settings. Viola´ No more problems. I am sure
you can do this with Mozilla Profile Manager. I just didn't try it.

Hi Brian,
"do you have more than one migratable profile?"
From Netscape (yes, I actually have 2 profiles),
Opera (no named user profile that I can find, but it does have preferences)
IE (same as Opera)
"Do you get a dialog asking which profile to migrate, or does it automatically migrate your profile because there is only one to migrate?"
Well, upon starting M1.1, Pop up window states "You are about to create a Mozilla profile based on your Netscape 4 profile. This will copy and
convert some of your Netscape 4 files to work with Mozilla. Your Netscape 4 profile data will not be modified. [Manage Profiles...] [[Convert
Profile]]
I tried [[Convert Profile]], the clock spins then the browser window opens - done. It didn't ask me WHICH profile to migrate. Quiting the app and
restarting will take me through the Manage or Convert process again.
so i tried [Manage Profiles...] where the only option I have is [Create profile...] or [Exit] (nothing in the "Available profiles" window)
[Create profile...] give me "Mozilla stores info... ... to begin creating your profile, click Next."
[Next] gives me "If you create... ... Enter new profile name: [____] (Default User is in blank)
I left [Choose Folder...] and [Region Selection...] alone.
and clicked [Finish]
[Finish] gives me the Mozilla Profile manager Now With Available Profiles!
"Default User" is now there and selected (highlighted) so I can [[Start Mozilla]]
Browser window opens, but with default settings and no migrated bookmarks (which I expected).
Changing window size and position should give me preferences when I Quit Mozilla (theoretically). So i quit.
Restarting Mozilla takes me back to [Manage Profiles...] [[Convert Profile]] and "Default user" is not there.
BUT... if I make a new user called "Default User" (same name as before), the window preferences ARE THERE! Window just like I left it!
So... it must be in the checking for current profiles that the error is happening.
To test this theory (hey, I'm on a roll today!) I started M1.1, [[Convert Profile]], changed size and position of window, quit M1.1.
then went into System HD:Documents:Mozilla:Profiles and found the "latest" converted user profilie folder (see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/
show_bug.cgi?id=160308 for more info), then named it "dave" (whatever you want).
Then reopened M1.1, but chose [Manage Profiles...] and made a new profile called "dave" and [Finish], [[Start Mozilla]].
Well WHAT DO YOU KNOW!?!? It worked!
However now, I have to [Manage Profiles...], make new profile called "dave", [Finish], [[Start Mozilla]] each time I want to use M1.1
Hope this helps!

Using todays trunk build, I
- discarded all my profile data (threw away the folder "Mozilla" in "Documents")
- Launched Mozilla
- Told it to "Convert Profile"
- Set the window size, a couple of font prefs, and changed the theme
- Quit
- Relaunched
Program re-launched will all the changes I just made, so WFM...
David reported, in bug 149243, seeing this error in the javascript console:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code:
0x80004005
(NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIProperties.get]" nsresult: "0x80004005
(NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame ::
chrome://communicator/content/profile/profileSelection.js :: StartUp :: line 51"
data: no]
If, for the sake of argument, we assume the root cause stems from this error we
end up with the following piece of code (from profileSelection.js) as our culprit:
48 // "AggRegF" stands for Application Registry File.
49 // Forgive the weird name directory service has adapted for
50 // application registry file....
51 var regFile = dirServ.get("AppRegF", Components.interfaces.nsIFile);
This translates to a call to (I believe):
http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/xpcom/ds/nsProperties.cpp#123
which could potentially fail by:
- failing to find "AppRegF in the hash table, or
- failing to QI the result of the hash table lookup to an nsIFile
Alan, can you see if you are also getting this JS error?

Hi Brian,
Here are the errors that I get:
Error: popup has no properties
Source File: chrome://messenger/content/mailNavigatorOverlay.xul
Line: 110
and multiples of
Error: _content has no properties
Source File: chrome://navigator/content/navigator.js
Line: 165
What I did was open new window, resize and move and close, then New Window.
If it helps, the preferences ARE remaining while M1.1 is still running. And it does retain the preferences as noted in the "dave" experiment above.
(I've been using the "dave" method since my last report with 100% success and reproducability.)
I'll now try the JS copnsole on the "dave" method for a reference.

Same JS Console errors this time around also Using the "dave" method from comment #18 above.
And the "dave" profile is still holding the window size and position preferences.

I'm at a loss... There are other open bugs regarding issues of installing newer
versions over older versions of Mozilla. Also, as Cheryl suggested above, there
could be something wrong in the profiles directory itself.
The only think I can think of is to completely delete the Mozilla application
and remove all of the profile information (hard drive\Documents\Mozilla) and see
what happens from a clean slate.

Hi Brian,
Did that first thing after I noticed this happening. (ie the second time I
started M1.1)
I did a find on the HD for Mozilla and trashed everything that displayed, then
emptied trash, then restarted. Used netscape to download a new copy, unstuffed
and installed.
Everything else seems to work (well, barring the other bugs mentioned in
Bugzilla). I have a G3 laptop running OS 9.1 that runs M1.0 perfectly (ie saves
profile and preferences
see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160308 for my original report
maybe there is something in the installer that hoses the profile manager?
(ok, I'm stretching)
now, is there some other file that you know of that would NOT be kept in a
folder with the name Mozilla that could be overlooked by Sherlock?
or, is there such thing as a Mozilla UNinstaller?
I will be glad to try the surgical delete again if you know of another file that
I could have forgotten to delete.
Alan
PS: any of you other guys receiving the CC: having the same problem or is it
just me?!?!??? ;)

No such thing as an uninstaller. And no need to trash everything again. If you
trashed the Mozilla Application and the Mozilla folder in "Documents" that would
have been everything.
This leads me down the "machine specific" road. Is there anything "unusual"
about the setup of your machine at work? Is there a non HFS+ volume in the mix?
Is it a network boot? Or is any part (app or profile) stored on a network volume?
Comment 26•24 years ago
|
||
Hi Brian,
2 HD, both HFS+, no network boot, app & profile on startup volume.
I will make a similar load on other machines here at work and see what happens.
Anything I should try when I load?

Ok, here are some more specs for you.
One Machine is a Beige Power Mac G3 / 233 MHZ desktop. This machine has 2 hfs+
formatted hard drives in in and is runinx os 9.2.2 an OS 10.1.5 from the same
unpartioned drive. The computer has 384 MB ram and is not on network boot nor is
anything stored on a network volume.
The second machine is a, Ibook GE, 500MHZ with 128 mb ram, running os 9.2.1. It
has a single HFS+ formatted HD. Again, no network boot and no network volumes.
Neither of these machines show a ROM version.
Mozill is working proplerly on both of these computers.

I've had this same issue with Netscape 7.02 and with Mozilla 1.2.1, but I think
I found a work-around. I'm thinking that the issue has to do with preference
files from previous versions of Netscape. Not sure off the top of my head, but
did OS 8.6 or OS 9 include Netscape? Perhaps 4.0? Maybe from some other
software. It may also have to do with the fact that the partition that my OS
and my documents folder reside upon is not HFS+, but plain old HFS. Well, after
deleting the Mozilla app and folder, as well as the hard
drive>Documents>Mozilla>Profiles folder, and the Mozilla and Netscape folders in
System Folder>Preferences, I reinstalled Mozilla on a different HFS+ partition.
When I started up Mozilla, I also put the profiles on the same HFS+ partition.
Created a new profile, went to a page and bookmarked it, then quit the app and
restarted it. The bookmark is still there.
I really think the issue is about prefs folders from previous versions of
Netscape corrupting or pre-empting Mozilla's ability to access the profiles
folder, but I am not a developer, just a troubleshooter with some time on my
hands and an aversion to using Micro$oft IE on my old, creaky, slow box.
Details for the box: PowerTowerPro, 266 MHz G3 card torqued up to 312 MHz. 224
MB RAM, OS 9.1, Mozilla 1.2.1, 4 HD's with a mix of HFS+ and HFS on seven
partitions.
Hope this helps. Looks like a stale topic, but still fresh to me.
